3-3-5 still on option

Even though Arnett bailed I still like the idea of bringing in a coach that understands the 3-3-5. It seems like a good fit with our current personnel and lack of depth at DT.
It will be interesting to see the direction HCDB goes now.

Seems he interviewed the Navy guy and then got Arnett for a minute which they both run it.

Just a cautionary note. Our good friends over at UCONN had a recent experience with the 3-3-5 defense. That was the defense that Defensive Coordinator Billy Crocker brought over from Villanova when Randy Edsall hired him after the 2016 season. Crocker's last team was #1 in FCS in total defense and points allowed per game.

Let's just say his experience at UCONN was not quite the same. Now, this is not to say that I don't like the 3-3-5 (I do). Nor is it to say that Billy Crocker is a bad coach. UCONN is UCONN after all. But there is no guarantee that the 3-3-5 and a DC who had success with it elsewhere is a sure thing at Syracuse.

It will be interesting to see what Dino comes up with next. Whichever way he goes I will be fine with the decision until I am not (which is hopefully never).

3-3-5 is the old WV defense is it not? So it's not like this is some new flashy defense. And why do people assume we can't recurit DL at Syracuse. I think Dino can't recruit DL, but fact is the Jones brother's weren't legacy recruits beating our doors down and we landed those guys. We used to get plenty of quality DL. Just not so much since Dino got here, recruiting is an issue right now.

We don't have trouble recruiting DEs. We have had a hard time recruiting enough DTs for a solid 2-deep roster. In a 3-3-5, you only need 2 DTs for a full 2-deep. Btw, the Jones bros were a long time ago. They predated Marrone.

Yeah, using the best guys from the last 20 years doesn't really work.

I think DT recruitment is only part of the reason to switch. I mean Venables at Clemson ran it a ton this year - and they have the best DL recruits annually. It's a system that is hard to read from a QB's POV - you can bring guys from all over and disguise things pretty well. It's a nice counter to modern spread offenses.

Guys who were blocked might be better than we think.

You can still run out Jonathan - Black - Elmore - Richards as the front four from guys we know. 5 seniors graduating isn't a good thing but is the reason we haven't seen much of anyone else up there particularly since 2 are likely to get drafted.

Regardless of how everything shakes out and who we hire lets all be happy and optimistic that the D is automatically going to play better on opening day than they did the last time we played BC lol.

At first I saw this and thought no can't be true. I just went though every recruiting class since DM was hired. You are absolutely right. A couple of names stand out and only as solid contributors. I didn't realize Elmore was recruited at DT, he's a g'dang FB for crying out loud.
