Now a kid could go pro out of high school, take a few years to see if an NBA career is possible, and go back to play college. Between portal and this pool of players that will surely build up, why bother recruiting high school kids?

Exactly. Players playing in the G League and being eligible to play in college was bad enough. If you have players who actually played in NBA games able to go back and play college, then I think that’ll be it for me watching college sports. It will officially be minor leagues, even though it pretty much already is.

All of this has run downhill into the high school ranks too, at least in NY. High school basketball is completely different than it was 10 years ago. When I was growing up and going to the NYS final four every year I got to watch some incredible talent in person. All of the Mount Vernon and Peekskill teams with players like Elton Brand, Hilton Armstrong, Ben Gordon, Jonathan Mitchell. The Niagara Falls teams with Paul Harris and Jonny Flynn, JD teams with Rautins and then Triche and Coleman. One year I went to the federation tournament (where NYC champions play the public school champions) and watched Kemba Walker play against Lance Stephenson, and then Stephenson's team lose to Mount Vernon. I took a hiatus going to the final four since they took it out of Glens Falls for a while. Went back in 2023 and was completely astonished at the level of play. Not even recognizable in terms of talent and skill. Nowadays all of the talent goes to prep school starting their junior year because they are all now chasing the money from power conference scholarshps even when most of them aren't at that talent level.

I think Melo should start fanning the flames of this ridiculousness and petition the NCAA for his three years of eligibility back. Just say “I want to play with my son.” Just do it to poke the toothless bear with no real intention of playing. Just put the NCAA in an embarrassing light and bring this nonsense to a halt before it gets started. If Kansas or one of the other mercenary programs decides to keep pursuing “professional players” he can get on the horn with some of his NBA and G League friends and say “alright, we’re gonna build a roster of professionals too, and I will pay them to chase a title. The HS kids can go to JUCO or low D1.”

It’s going to take something equally ridiculous to counter the ridiculousness going on now to actually stop the madness. What if a group of schools got together and sued the schools that play players who have previously played in professional leagues? Turn the system into a train wreck.

I just found out that Baylor expects Nnjai to play this season! In the ESPN report, Scott Drew mentioned what it would take to get Nnjai in a game: physical, learning the O/D, etc. Nothing about academically enrolling at Baylor. With college players being paid, the only thing that separates them from other professional players is that they are students. While we realize that there have been many 'fake' students for a long time, I'd be surprised if the student charade lasts much longer. After that last line in the sand is breached, all sorts of possibilities open up.

Apples and oranges. 1) Melo already played college ball so his eligibility clock he started is long expired and 2) He signed an NBA contract.

The NCAA’s fearless leader apparently is putting his foot down on players like Flowers ever playing college ball after signing an NBA contract.

Nnaji and others that played G league or overseas is apparently ok though which is still nuts.

Having the first father son sports duo in college sports would be incredible.

i used to watch nba, nfl, mlb...havent for years...seems its only a matter of time until i lose interest in ncaabb ...with all of these shenanigans going on...it just isnt the same for me...and the empty dome crowds show im not the only one

I just checked Google. There is no age limit for NCAA athletes. But I remember maybe 30 years ago when watching a basketball game, the commentator said a very old basketball player won't be eligible to play next year because he will be too old. So there must be a rule in the last century regarding the age.
