Yeah I guess a potential coaching candidate like Ryan Odom won’t want to come to Cuse if we can’t even compete with VCU on NIL.
Its an embarrassment imo.

This is money coming straight from VCU to the players, separate from NIL.

Syracuse is behind in NIL, but has (or should have) an advantage when it comes to distributing profits from basketball. Now, of course, this assumes the admins will commit to it and the attendance woes haven’t completely torpedoed profits.

You pointed out the difference I was going to as far as the payments coming directly from the school. But one thing is VCU doesn't have football worry about, like SU does.

Next question is how many non football schools pay their basketball team that much… cant imagine too many.

Is that average between all 15 players? The starters getting 1M+ and reserves $3000?

If hoops gets $5 million of the $20.5 million next year that’s $417,000 a piece for twelve players. That’s not including any other NIL possibilities. There’s also another $1 million coming from the NIL Tournament in Las Vegas. Not every player is going to get the same. I would set a base salary that’s the same for every player and then base the rest on abilities and comparison to their market value.

The administration better commit to it or they will have their hoops team playing in one hell of a big empty building up on the hill during the winter

The way things have been going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re fine with that.

College sports is a thing of the past. It's pro sports where success is now mainly determined by money to buy and retain the best players. It's dead and buried -- like the SU basketball program. Maybe I'd be happier if I was an alumni of one of the SEC or B1G giant state universities athletic factories that will forever dominate now.

This all disgusts me. It may push me out of NCAAbb altogether.

Serious question, though: Our Wireless Company—what kind of deal do we have with them for the Dome? Do they/would they pony up dough to ensure we have a better product to better promote ‘their’ Dome?

What’s the term of their sponsorship, and is it in jeopardy (of renewal) based on our poor performance?

Ooh, just found this:

Interesting, that SU terminated a “lifetime“ deal. So, we can play hardball when money is concerned. And pay out a settlement to terminate a contract early….

What is Autry stealing from the school? 2 mil per? That's 400k per starter that could go to the players.

We have the biggest stadium and in some ways biggest fanbase. I don't expect the highest pay roll or most expensive coach but it's time for the basketball program to not subsidize the field hockey team.

Maybe universities shouldn’t have athletic departments at all?

It’s kind of weird that they do, right?

If you disbursed Autry’s salary among the starters, who coaches the team, a volunteer? I’m not saying that wouldn’t be better. Just that it’s unlikely—he’d have to already be well-off, or a retiree….

someone needs to manage the sports teams? The bad part is the millions of dollars they manage because of hoops and football. Money has truly ruined college sports.

Schools will be able to pay players up to $20 million/year (for all athletes). We have the largest seating capacity. We have a naming rights deal for the Dome, something not many schools can have. And yet I don't have confidence that SU will be among the highest spenders.

In previous generations it made sense as part of a university mission to seek excellence in all human endeavors.

Now... it's not necessarily excellence that's sought.

Sure I'm more trying to say that we need a competitive coaching salary distributed among starters just for a start.
