5 Bold and 5 Timid Predictions for 2024

Willis freshman All-American is a great take.

We will have the best pass catchers in the ACC. JRS will be on an All-ACC team. Gadsden is a day 1 draft pick. I think one or two of Pena/Haynes/Ross explodes.

Tomcat would be in heaven!!!
Start the season against Ohio win the toss defer to 2nd half.
The Ohio kickoff goes to James, who catches the ball at the 5. He cuts to the middle of the field gets a key block at the 20. Then brushes off a would be tackler at the 25. Then has an open field as he runs for an opening TD for the 2024 season.

And the 14 Tuba led Orange marching band breaks into “Down the Field “

I think a bold prediction would be that we do not win the ACC. We‘re pretty much a lock.
Youre Crazy Omar Epps GIF

I agree that 45 sacks is likely too high a figure. It would have put us in the top ten nationally last year, which I think is a stretch.

I based that figure off of us having 39 sacks in 2021 with less talent against a harder schedule.

The explosive plays are a stretch as well, but Washington had 23 plays over 50 yards last year. If we stack up a bunch against the weaker teams on our schedule, it’s not a crazy figure.

But yes, if we approach both of those figures it will likely mean a historic season.

Just having fun here.

So, you're saying there's a chance ...

I would like to have kept Alford. He would have made this a more proven group. Otherwise, we have only a couple guys who had 20+ catches at WR for us last year.

Meh. Alford is a solid player. But if we keep him we very likely don’t pick up JRS. And JRS is just a true junior. What did Alford do in his second season? 13 rec for 249 yds and 2 TD’s. JRS had 45 rec for 724 yds and 3 TD’s.
I’ll take JRS over Alford.

Yeah, that's fine, but he had 33 catches for an 18 yard average last year.

Hatcher is the only returning WR who had more than 7 catches last year.

Only bold and undoubtedly inaccurate predictions.
Bold Prediction 1.
By the time the bowl game comes around we don’t have the OC or DC from the beginning of the season.
Bold Prediction 2.
McCord goes Day 2 of draft to the Lions.
Prediction 3.
This will be the last season of ACC football with Florida State and Clemson.
Easiest Bold Prediction 4.
Cuse fans make a scene in Vegas that is talked about for years. Football team puts up 50 burger on national tv.
Bold Prediction 5.
Game 1 and Game 12 will have the same starting OL and DL. (Thus creating bold prediction 1)

Think Ross gets 20 receptions and is in line to take over in 2025.

Bold Prediction 6: everyone will opt out of the bowl once again.

I assume you mean Emanuel Ross and not Justus Ross-Simmons correct? In HS so many of his catches were near the line of scrimmage. Guessing his QB was not great. He looks very fast and pretty electric with the ball in his hands. Wonder what his 100m time is. A new receiver taking over means a starter is leaving which will not be Haynes. JRS could stay another year for his true senior season. I think we need to find a way to get Tremble on the field some so he is ready to take over OG's role next year. Considering Tremble is just 205 lbs I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those snaps out wide just like OG his freshman year.

Bold:
SU scores on its opening offensive play.
Punt return for a TD in game 1.
10-3
Allen has a game where he runs for 200 yards.

Timid:
13 tubas - a new SUMB record
The 13 tubas would be a record for the new configuration for the dome, but not all time.

Back in the 1990s, I believe we had 14-16 tubas out there most of the time.

The last 20 or 25 years have been a dark time for tubas (and really, for all of us).

Let's hope 2024 is the start of a new era.

I have a vision. I see an era of extreme loudness in the dome, with regular sell out home games, comfy chairs, coolers that are actually cold and well stocked with tasty IPAs (this is not all about me), deep fried turkey on the SyraCruz tailgate menu and a cuse.com app featuring a hologram of the Saltine Warrior killing a nittany lion.

Okay, I will settle for a cuse.com app that makes it easy for me to track out of town scores for college football (and baseball while it is still going on).

Let's GO! War Damn Otto!!!!

BOLD
11-1 conference championship game
Game Day
McCord Heisman talk
Team averages over 30 points per game.
Fran named coach of the year.

TIMID
8-4 solid bowl game
Top attendance in the last 20 years
Willis makes all American frosh team
Dan catches 5 touchdowns as a TE
No double timeouts for the season.
Strange but I predicted an a=exact 11-1 record with their only lost in OT to Miami.
I'll be at the VT-SU game - brings back their near annual BE games that I used to attend here and at Blacksburg - GF was a VT Holie grad......
My only worry concerns the west coast swing......all the teams are beatable.
So proud that SU hired Brown - Dino should have been let go 3 years ago - playbook was out on him in his 2 year here and he did nothing to elevate, adjust or improve upon his system. Simlar path as Jim B in BBall......SU is on the rise and to hell with the Clemson and FSU judases......

Again with the Dino myth, he totally changed his approach, strengthened the defense a ton and changed the offense completely to play complimentary football and not run the defense into the ground. What hurt him wasn’t the quality of the top half of the roster, it was the inability to cover multiple key injuries. The “system” (whatever that means) was fine. You don’t go 6-0 and 4-0 to start the last two years if the “book” was out on him. You also aren’t firing a guy that went 10-3 two years before. He was 18-19 his last three years with all the injuries. Dino’s problem was that looked like that was where he was stuck.

I had no problem moving on, Fran is pitching a perfect game so far. He’s done a very good job improving the team and roster from when he took over.

Fran took over a team in its second best position after when P took over. He’s brought in a lot of talent, but there was a foundation with some quality players on both sides of the ball and the specialists. This wasn’t a tear down and rebuild at all. He started with a .500 team (3 bowls in six years) and improved it, not a 3-9/4-8 program.

You make a number of good points. The one I disagree with is that Dino didn’t adjust. He completely abandoned his Orange is the new Fast offense, because he didn’t have the horses. He gave up trying to manage the D and bought in 100% into the 3-3-5. He was trying everything and the kitchen sink to make it work. He just never had the OL to be able to keep his QBs healthy. Yes, that failure in recruiting is on him. But to say he didn’t adjust is very inaccurate IMO.

Call them bold predictions, call them wishful thinking, call them the ramblings of a bored sports fan who's stuck inside this weekend and looking to entertain himself - they arrive all the same.

5 Bold Predictions for 2024:

1)
Syracuse has two running backs run for 800+ yards each

For the first time since Jerome Smith (1,170) and Prince-Tyson Gulley (830) both ran for over 800 yards in 2012, LeQuint Allen and Yasin Willis will accomplish that same feat. HCFB has said he wants to establish the run and dictate the line of scrimmage. Willis already physically looks like an upperclassman and shined in the spring game. The Babers era was the bell cow era - I think Fran looks to distribute touches more and Willis will be up to the task against a relatively weak schedule.

2) Kyle McCord breaks multiple single season passing records

Ryan Nassib (and the entire offence) had a special year in 2012, setting the record for yards (3,749) and passing TDs (26) - McCord will break them both this year. While Lemon, Sales, and West were a tremendous trio of receives for Nassib in 2012, none of them were guys who could take the top off or turn a dig route into a 70+ yard TD. McCord looks to have the deepest and most diverse complement of offensive weapons we've seen in decades - including guys who can bring the explosive element that the 2012 offence lacked. That 2012 offence also really didn't start clicking until halfway through the year, so Nassib left a lot of meat on the bone, statistically speaking.

3) Syracuse will have 15+ explosive plays of over 50 yards

In the last few years, we haven't eclipsed ten 50+ yard explosive plays in a single season. There are many reasons this is the case, but I think a lack of explosive athletes (duh) and a lack of depth have been the two main contributing factors. The expected emergence of Willis will allow Allen to stay more fresh and hopefully have the legs to finish off some of the long runs he's been caught on. I also expect Yazeed Haynes and Emanuel Ross to bring game breaking ability to the offence we haven't seen in quite some time. Add in a healthy Gadsden pulling coverage his way, and Kyle McCord putting balls in better spots for big yards after catch, and I expect us to see more big plays than we have in years - especially against a relatively soft schedule.

4) Syracuse has 5+ players taken in the NFL Draft

While some of the players with the most raw talent are underclassmen, we absolutely have some seniors who could hear their name called at Lambeau Field next April. I think McCord and Fadil Diggs (DE) are locks to be drafted, but I also expect Marlowe Wax (LB), Justin Barron (LB/S), and Dion Wilson Jr (DL) to be drafted. Oronde Gadsen (WR/TE) could always leave before his eligibility is up, and seniors like Alijah Clarke (S) and J'Onre Reed (C) could get their names in the mix with big senior seasons. I predict Cuse will have five or more players taken in the draft for the first time since 2006.

5) College Gameday will come to Syracuse

OK this one is definitely more wishful thinking than bold prediction, but hear me out. Georgia Tech and Stanford won't be easy games, but I expect us to be favoured at home in both of them - win both of those games and there is a good chance we are 5-0 going into NC State. Pull off that win, and we're ranked going into a bye week before we kick the pitt out of Pitt. After that, it's a home game against our former Big East rival Virginia Tech. Other than a road game against Miami, VT should be favoured in every game they play before us. Given the energy Fran has injected into the program, and how he's brought the alumni back into the fold, it's not crazy to think that a ranked, 7-0 Syracuse hosting a ranked 7-1 or 6-2 Virginia Tech would be a desirable target for ESPN and College Gameday. We also finish the season hosting another old Big East rival in Miami, but that week will be loaded with other quality games. Prediction: Gameday in Syracuse for Virginia Tech on November 2nd.

5 Timid Predictions for 2024:

1)
Emanuel Ross catches 30+ passes for 400+ yards

Might be my favourite recruit in the class. I don't expect him to be a "starter" early (especially because he wasn't here for the spring), but I think he's the type of player that HCFB and Jeff Nixon (OC) will draw up plays for to get the ball in his hands a few times a game.

2) 10+ players will catch 10+ passes

As mentioned several times now, we have talent and depth like we haven't seen before - Fran is going to utilize it and get guys involved. With few exceptions, the era of the redshirt is over. If a player has talent and is physically ready, you play him in more than four games - guys want to play and will move on if they don't. At RB, Allen and Willis are locks to have 10+ receptions. Gadsden and Villari are locks to get 10+ receptions at TE, and I wouldn't be surprised if Tremble makes an impact. I think we see seven guys rotate through at WR and all go over that figure.

3) The defence will have 45+ sacks

Fadil Diggs is a bonafide NFL edge player - his presence plus the the addition of other big athletes on the D-line like Dion Wilson Jr., Michael Nwokocha, and Isaiah Hastings has changed the complexion of our defence. Add these guys to some talented players already here in Braylen Ingraham, Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff, Kevin Jobity, and Rashard Perry, and I expect this defence to get after the QB.

4) The team will average fewer than 5 penalties per game

Don't need to say much here. Penalties have been a huge issue for us - both volume of penalties and the timing of those penalties. HCFB seems to be saying and doing the right things to get this issue fixed. Averaging fewer than four penalties per game would have put a team in the top ten least penalized teams last year. Given the new schemes and amount of new players, I think that goal would be a stretch. However, I think fewer than 5 per game is a goal we can and will achieve.

5) Most of these predictions will be wrong.

That's just how it usually works.

Made some outlandish predictions prior to the season, thought I'd see what (if anything) I got right, and share my findings to facilitate any required public shaming.

5 Bold Predictions for 2024:

1)
Syracuse has two running backs run for 800+ yards each
  • Very wrong on this one. Running game struggled all year - rushing for fewer than 100 yards in 6 of 13 games (and only rushing for more than 150 yards once!).
  • LeQuint finished with 1021 yards rushing, and our second leading rusher had only 130 yards rushing on 36 carries.
  • Thought we'd see more of Yasin Willis, but I guess our reliance on the short passing game and LeQuint's pass blocking limited his participation.
2) Kyle McCord breaks multiple single season passing records
  • Nailed it (as most of us did). McCord beat Nassib’s single season passing record by over 1000 yards, and also broke the single season record for passing TDs. What a season.

3) Syracuse will have 15+ explosive plays of over 50 yards
  • Very wrong. I believe we only had 4 plays of 50+ yards. We also had 8 plays of 40+ yards, and 17 plays of 30+ yards.
  • We were great at moving the sticks and sustaining drives with with the short passing game - didn't need to rely on large chunk plays as much.
4) Syracuse has 5+ players taken in the NFL Draft
  • To Be Determined, but I'm not sure I see 5+ NFL draft picks moving on from the team.
  • I think Gadsden, Diggs, and McCord (if he doesn't get another year) are the only locks to be drafted.
5) College Gameday will come to Syracuse
  • Wrong. As of now, it doesn't look like we have many home games on the schedule in 2025 that look like they will appeal to Game Day. Looks like I'll need to talk myself in Game Day coming in 2026.
5 Timid Predictions for 2024:

1)
Emanuel Ross catches 30+ passes for 400+ yards
  • Wrong. Played in four games and had 5 catches for 78 yards.
  • Really thought we'd see more of Ross. I still think he emerges as a big contributor next year and him and Haynes have the highest ceiling out of all of returning/ arriving receivers.
  • The steady play of Pena and emergence of Meeks really limited opportunities for the younger guys.
2) 10+ players will catch 10+ passes
  • Wrong, but not by much. We had fives players with 500+ receiving yards, and nine players catch 8+ passes (and four players catch 60+ passes), so we definitely spread the ball around.
3) The defence will have 45+ sacks
  • Wrong. Our lack of pass rush was definitely a disappointment and needs to be addressed in the off season. Surprised we didn't see more blitzing.
  • We only 27 sacks and had five games with one or fewer sacks.
4) The team will average fewer than 5 penalties per game
  • Wrong. We averaged 7.07 penalties a game, however this team definitely seemed more disciplined than previous years. Step in the right direction.
  • We also averaged only 4.6 penalties per game over our last five games.

5) Most of these predictions will be wrong.
  • Nailed it.
So that's 2/9 (and likely 2/10). Please keep this in mind when reading any of my posts in the future.
