5* Duke Freshmen PG to transfer

DIdn't look ready for big time D1 basketball. Not surprising since he reclassified from 2016 and skipped his senior year of HS to join Duke a year early. I see Grayson Allen being the starting PG with Frank Jackson the SG for Duke next year.

what about jones?

Thornton did not impress me. Another case of a star rating assigned based upon who he signs with rather than if he has any game. Frank Howard has a much better handle.

Jones is basically a defensive specialist at this point. Not sure how he was a McDonald's All American - I think it was another "this kid is going to Duke, he must be good" ratings.
Then what about Kennard?

What about Kennard? He'll still get minutes, and will be asked to do less and focus on shooting from deep. He was forced to make some plays when Thornton's minutes dwindled as the season went on.

What about the other half of the equation? Duke and K recruited the kid, and must have seen a good deal of him. They were wrong, too? This kid might find a program that is a better fit, and then excel the way G did.

Ugh. K and staff basically made him reclass despite his family's objections, so that they could get semblance of a backcourt after Tyus Jones/Cook were gone. But now that they have Allen sticking around and Jackson coming in they don't need him. Basically used him for a year and then said see ya later. Cutthroat K

They don't need him because they have Jackson? I think Thornton is better than Jackson but that's just me.

I agree I think they wanted both and Thornton is a very good player. They are now in the same situation they were last year - no experienced PG and just SG/SF back ups (they used both Matt Jones and Allen this year). Thornton was ahead of the pack defensively which is unusual for a freshman but needed work on the offensive end - decision making, facilitating, running the offense. His father wasn't happy at all and wasn't shy in showing his displeasure that his son wasn't starting (still played 23-26 minutes a game while learning), was told by coach K not to shoot as much and to learn/run the offensive sets. Dad probably thought his son would have been better off red shirting like he had always wanted. I think Duke's staff liked the son but were frustrated with dad (visa-versa)and both decided to cut their losses over the lack of trust and control issues.

DURHAM, N.C. –
Freshman guard Derryck Thornton will transfer out of Duke University, school officials announced Sunday. Thornton will depart Duke in good academic standing and is expected to transfer to another Division I institution.

“We wish Derryck the best and appreciate his contributions to our team this season,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “We support his decision and want only what is best for him in the future.”

A native of Chatsworth, Calif., Thornton averaged 7.1 points and 2.6 assists in 36 games for Duke during the 2015-16 season.

“I have loved my time at Duke, but I want to pursue the opportunity to play college basketball closer to home,” Thornton said. “I want to thank my teammates and coaches for their support this year. The relationships I have with them will always be special to me.”

Duke finished the season with a 25-11 record, including an 11-7 mark in the ACC. The Blue Devils made their 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 25th time in program history.

That guy is the best evidence of star rating based on affiliation. He commits to Duke as a 5*... dude played like a 3*. I know not all 5* pan out but this guy never even looked like he had the potential to pan out.

Agree with this. His assist to Turnover ratio was worse than Kaleb's last year. "You're signing with Duke? Ok, you must be good, we will put you in the McDonalds game".

Hey, now! I posted about this like a week ago!

Was Thornton a McDonald's AA when he skipped his last year of HS? Thought he missed out on all of that stuff by reclassifying?

I'm sure Thornton will do fine. He looked physically over matched, but the skill level is there. I doubt that Duke is happy that he's transferring, but they'll be ok. I saw Jackson play against Battle's team this year, and he definitely looked like the best player on the court. Battle didn't have that great of a game--partly because his team's pg (going to Auburn, I think) was running everything and trying to do a little too much.
