5 Schools The Big Ten Could Have Added That Were Better Options ...

Never understood why they didn't invite Mizzou (who was panting for an invite) - over, or in addition to, low population one trick pony Nebraska
yeah, but that 1 trick is the equivilant of Scotty beaming shlit on and off the Enterprise as he damn well pleases.

Jim Delaney's hubris.

I said when the Big Ten added Nebraska that it knew it had 0 chance to ever get ND, in any form, and so would be wise to prepare to keep adding to its west with Mizzou and KU. I noted that if the BT failed to make that move, the SEC might take Mizzou, and the SEC in MO would provide a permanent hurt on already battered BT football.

Delany decided that rather than adding to make his Nebraska addition pay off in the biggest way with KU and Mizzou, he wanted to try to stick it to UNC classmate Swofford by moving into the northeast fully.

So he took a Maryland that has been absolutely hopeless in sports finances for 25 years or more and Rutgers, which makes Maryland seem great in every way.

And Swofford responded not by doing what Delany assumed, add UConn, but by adding Louisville.

The finances of the B1G make it attractive but the ACC is a better fit in every other way for Syracuse. The B1g really missed on Missouri and it's almost certain Missouri would turn down the Big ten if offered now. SEC is much better athletically and the $$ will quickly pass the Big Ten when this network is up and running.

You make it sound like Delaney and Swofford are acting unilaterally. They are not. They have a lot of strong egos to feed and appease.

Nebraska is a top 10=15 Football brand and does move the needle nationally somewhat in college football. Mizzou doesn't have the national cache in FB. Missouri is like the NC State of the old Big XII they were always decent, but never won squat in the 2 big sports.

If the B1G was using the Penn State model for expansion Nebraska made more sense than Mizzou. If the B1G was using the Rutgets/Maryland model for expansion than Mizzou made more sense.

Mizzou made sense for the B1G in 2012 but by that time the SEC was inviting them.

My List:

5 Schools The Big Ten Could Have Added That Were Better Options ...than Rutgirls

1. LeMoyne: Actually Beat Syracuse in Basketball and has more National Championships

2. Sewanee: A former SEC School...nuff said

3. North Dakota St.: Reverse Mirror image of Ruttie: A 1AA whom schedules OOC games versus 1A schools and wins them

4. Binghamton: Better Academics, better fan base

5. Oklahoma: Ok already going to happen...will add them

You forgot about Oswego St! Better hockey team than Rutgirlz, and immediately competitive. :p

I just can't believe what Rutgers did to Legrand, that school has zero leadership qualities.

Football has been turned into a total after thought there

They can't act unilaterally, but Delany is driven by extreme ego and desire to 'best' everyone, especially someone like Swofford, who played football at UNC the same time Delany played basketball. Delany does act to move the BT where it wants it to go, which always comes down to his desire to prove, as a number of sports writers have said about him, that he is the smartest man in the room.

Swofford is much less ego driven, but there is no doubt that he intends to position the ACC in a certain way. For example, I think Swofford decided before we ever agreed to add Miami that he wanted ND on board. And he set out to make that possible. Delany will hate him forever for that accomplishment.

I wanted the ACC in 2003 and remain very pleased with our fit in the conference.

It's about as close to perfect as you can get.

And it is clearly a better fit than the Big Ten.

Is anyone in this thread arguing this?

Spot on. Binghamton has had SEC-style scandals in their athletic department, and has not lost a football game in their entire existence.

Eh, the B1G added Rutgers for one reason, and one reason only: the hope of converting NJ and metro NYC cable TV homes into higher paying subscribers of the BTN.

It's the exact same reason they added Maryland, just substitute MD and metro DC for NJ and metro NYC.

Of course there were "better" schools to add from an athletics brand and performance standpoint, but that was never the point.

We know...kill joy! ;)

But even if every TV in those metro areas was tuned to the BTN 24-7, the B1G doesn't get any additional money because cable operators in NY, CT, VA, and DC are still only paying $.10 per subscriber instead of the $1 per subscriber they get from the operators in MD and NJ. Then to add gasoline to the fire is Comcast's refusal to put the BTN on the regular tier (like ESPN 1 & 2) instead of leaving it in its present place on the premium sports tier, so they're only going to get the $1 from the subscribers of the premium tier and not $1 from everyone.

Sorry to put this on you, but just curious, do we know a final tally of the difference in $$ from B10 to ACC? How is a conference in the heart of a rust belt that is continually losing population, have a better outlook financially than conferences in the West, or SE?

jr4750...the money is all smoke n mirrors.

The B1G should earn the most but the ACC isn't as bad as the B12 expsanistas and B1G fanboys will tell you.

What is happening is FOX has declared Sports War on ESPN. I'll put my money on ESPN.

Supposedly Fox bought a majority stake in YES to be able to bundle BTN with YES. They will tell cable providers if they want YES they have to take BTN on the basic tier. That would put a lot of pressure on cable providers in northern NJ to comply or lose a lot of irate Yankees fans.
