1) drive down and score long sustained drive for TD

2) after the safety. 1st down and got inside the 50.. we went 5 wide and made a poor throw to the RB which to me should be the 5th option that got us back on our heels a bit when we didnt really need to be doing that yet, ended up 3rd a long and not great blocking

3) another nice drive, missed Taj in endzone pretty wide open take a FG

and thats it with the kneel down.. 12-6 would have liked 16--6

4)short drive into Ohio territory to start the half. Missed taj again on TD pass. but we followed that up with a first down and then the marginal blocking penalty on Tucker and the formation which i never saw a replay and we were going to at least get a FG shot out of that drive as we were at the 30..

really at this point thats 10-14 pts given away. the first TD pass in the 1st half was pretty simple play game would have been pretty much decided and we probably see Shrader for a good chunk of the game.. Couple that we dropped the INT that would have stopped another of their FGs.

5) another long drive for Fg we stalled at the 2.. quite simply it should be about 30-3 right now.

6) Another long drive for a TD

7) another long drive for a TD

you can see 44-6 written all over this game. We moved the ball and had we punched in the 2 inside the 10 we win by closer to 30 and feel even better.

never really got stopped but the 1 drive and we stalled out close and took the penalties on the drive that would have put the game mid 3rd.

any game you score on 6 of 7 drives is a pretty good effort and without the block below the waste thats probably what we see.

The stalled FG drive at the 2 was really my only issue all game with play calling, I wanted to see us run the ball there on 3rd down. I thought we should’ve pounded Tucker agin behind Bleich. (Imagine that, wanting us to run the ball because well we looked like we could actually run the ball. Big improvement.)

good post. Left to much meat on the bone but we don’t have a lot of games on the schedule where we’ll be able to get away with that.

That 3rd down was my only gripe with the play calling. That was really the only time Gilbert failed to give our players a chance.

the problem with all that is it assumes every play hits and we score TDs pretty much every drive. 6 of 7.

I was really happy to just have the long drives. Especially after that 6 play red zone defensive stand by our D at the end of the 1st start of the second. We only ended with a FG but took about 7-8 minutes off the clock. If the O would have had a three and out like last year it would have been horrendous for the D

It’s hard to run it in from the 2 when the other team is sitting on the run. The two stalled drives are my biggest nit to pick with devito… he seemed way too skittish on the one play and missed some guys open according to the announcers. Also no excuse for missing Taj in the end zone on the other.

On the 2nd drive, after the misfire to Tucker, I thought there was just one missed block on the reverse to CJ. Or maybe he just missed a cut.

Hopefully that TE pop play comes back, can understand why they didn't do it on Saturday.

It is hard to pass the ball in the redzone. Having a running QB adds a big dimension. Look at all the TDs Dungey had. Tommy can run but Shrader really should be our redzone QB. If an NFL team can take out one of the best passing QBs of all time, we certainly can take out Tommy.

Tommy scored our first touchdown yesterday. Running. From the red zone.

Yeah...he was good there...I think Otto means to play the percentages. Shrader is better running than TD...he gives us a better chance in the Red Zone.

The guy who hasn’t played QB in college in a game in 2 years is a better % play than the guy who’s a 3rd year starter and played 2 days ago?

So - until Devito throat-kicks a dude, we’re all just gonna keep on keeping on with the #narrative that he can’t run at all?

Not saying that...but it appears he is...I trust Dino to make the right call. However, if Shrader comes in while we are in the Red Zone...I'll watch with interest to see if it works.

Also, helicopter throat kicks are not as bad as blocking just above the knee to ACC refs

I think this was my point with my after game thought about leaving points on the field. IMO, 6th year HC with 5th year QB needs to get 7 on those three drives we stalled out on. At least moving forward. Wiling to chalk this week up to first game cobwebs. Moving forward, we can't leave 12 points on the field vs. better competition.

we left pts on the first one because we missed a pass.. the 2nd one i think they played safer because of the time and score.. if that becomes a trend then its an issue.. scoring and not taking sacks to throw away fgs has been the issue in the past.

I want to be better and score every time down on every drive - but the teams that do that are playoff teams.

Expectations went from “can we score at all” to “we have to score every time”

We’re going to be somewhere in the middle, IMO.

Not picking on you or this post - just trying to make sure expectations are reasonable.

He's a good North-South runner, but Shrader is more elusive East-West.

We don't do reasonable around here, son!

Dino took Tommy out for Welch in the redzone.

So many positives in this game. The O-Line looked night-and-day better. Ohio's right-side edge guy got inside Mang/Servais a play or two, and Vet got driven into the backfield a couple times. But otherwise protection and run-blocking were solid. Big relief to see this unit functioning again.

Substitutions in the last series included Ellis (LG), Kauhi (RG) and Bradford (RT). Might have been others, but these guys looked really promising .. big strong ACC-level guys that can move their feet.

Defensive secondary continued it's stellar play. Chestnut looked like a veteran out there - exceptional anticipation and cover skills. Good thing he's not fast enough for Rutgirls! Linebackers were vastly improved against the run. Tackling, surging to the ball, play-recognition all looked improved. The two big concerns are: 1) safety looked shaky at times with LaBrosse getting beat to the corner and some confusion in zone coverage with Simmons/Carter; and 2) our D-Line, undersized to begin with, was clearly not at full strength without Williams and Jonathan (injury).

The D-Line issues are going to bite us unless we get healthy and make some adjustments. We are thin and undersized to begin with. But losing two starters left us vulnerable on the inside. Roscoe is a decent edge guy on passing downs, but inside he gets pushed all over the field. Harper was just ok. I thought Okechukwu looked stout, and Darton deserves more reps. This continues to be an area of serious concern.

It's our Achilles heel
