8/12/15 Practice # 4

Shafer praises George Morris for his burst, Devante MacFarlane for his pass protection in opening statement.

Shafer says Rodney Williams had a pick-6, Juwan Dowels had one yesterday, Zaire Franklin did well with run fit.

Last guy to earn unprompted praise was Parris Bennett.

Shafer stresses quality vs. quality in practice again.

Shafer praises Cam McPherson for consistency. Says hes not great at anything but solid at everything.

Shafer on Raymon: he's week to week. Matter of how fast he heals up.

Shafer praises Ben Lewis for blocking in new hybrid role

Shafer says team won't show a lot of new offense during Fan Fest.

Shafer says Matt Keller will have some butterflies in the opener. Has a good chance to be pretty good... seems to bode well.

Shafer says Steven Clark will be a very good football player, doing well fighting off double teams and he can run.

Shafer says it was hell-on-wheels trying to fend off teams trying to flip Clark.

Shafer says Denzel Ward has been limited with LBI since start of camp.

DB Eric Jackson is week to week with a lower-body injury. Has rode the bike the last two days. WR Troy Green, not at camp, also has an LBI

RFr. tackle Denzel Ward has been limited in practice with a "chronic" lower-body injury. Wears a brace on his right ankle at practice.

Shafer: Good energy throughout practice. A couple nice runs by George Morris. "Steve Ishmael's catching the ball real well, running routes."

Shafer said he was also pleased with WR Ben Lewis, and LBs Zaire Franklin & Parris Bennett.

SS: Ben Lewis "is a good, strong, physical runner... He's bright and aware of who he is." Doesn't put himself into bad spots. Fitting HB.

Shafer: Lineman Denzel Ward is nursing a nagging lower body injury. "Stock is up" on FR DL Steven Clark. He's strong, working vs. 2 blocks.

Shafer: DT John Raymon is now week to week with an upper-body injury. Was day to day as of last night.

Tim Daoust noted DEs Amir Ealey and Qaadir Sheppard as quick-twitch guys while 6-6 Jake PIckard has unteachable length, but less speed.

Shafer on how much SU will show offensively at Fan Fest on Saturday: "Not a whole lot."

Shafer noted Morris, McFarlane (pass-pro), Ishmael, R. Williams (pick six), Franklin and Bennett as strong performers at practice today.

Bennett, Hodge and Franklin will be the starters.

This is the deepest weve been at LB in a long time. Really feel like Vigille, Henderson and JT can come in and give us what we need if called upon. Thats excluding Shy and Taylor who can very well be in the mix as the season goes. First time we had a solid two deep.

The dreaded week to week for Raymon. Let's hope this is a minor inconvience.

Jeesh...that's ominous.

I was told by someone with the staff that LB is the least of their concerns and that the group will be very very good.
