A decent article from the Athletic this morning, Ive stated numerous times about our facilities and others said nah, its the least of our problems, in this article from former players facilities appears to be a NEED.

3-Step Plan to Reboot

It’s a 3 step plan

I don't pay for The Athletic. Can you sum it up?

Former players (anonymous) spoke on how poor the facilities were compared to other schools, especially on South Campus. They spoke on the GERG era and how back then, they basically tried running the Denver Broncos playbook which was too complex for 19-20 year olds.

Finally, some alumni said there's a disconnect between former players and the current team. Apparently some former players don't hear from the current team, get invited back, or have an opportunity to speak with current players.

Im disconnected a bit but I know we have invested in facilities of late. To still be THIS far behind the curve on facilities is troubling, and leads me to wonder if we can ever possibly get there.

Is it true or exaggerated about the alumni connection? The article makes it seem the 80's/90's guys are not welcome really ever.

I don't believe that the alumni were welcome until Dino and JW took over. They have made an effort to draw the alumni back in.

Aren't the South Campus facilities on the plan for upgrade or new facilities on the main campus?

It's been said forever, but if NYS HS football could be improved to something closer to its neighbors, PA and NJ, it would be a big help.

While I look forward to someday not having a backyard, it's a really tough for SU football not to have one when trying to recruit.

Thanks. South Campus was a mixed bag. Compared to other schools I can absolutely see how they'd pale in comparison. The isolation isn't fun especially if you're a freshman and you don't know anyone outside of the football team. I had some brutal winter nights because I didn't know that the radiators were electric unlike the dorms where in the winter they automatically came on. Placing athletes in the modern houses is a big step forward.

On the topic of the current disconnect, I find that to be somewhat inexcusable. Unless the player was a knucklehead, I don't know why you wouldn't welcome guys back just to give players advice on what to do and what not to do. That's a 180 of how the basketball team operates.

Wildhack invited the Big East Championship teams back from the late 90s. Had an event at his house.

Also, few of these former players donate so easy to complain about the facilities when you have no financial investment in them.

Marrone once turned away Troy Nunes because he didn't have an appointment.

I heard it wasnt that Nunes was turned away as much as it was he decided to run backwards all the way across campus before turning around and trying to ask Marrone if he could come in.

But then Nunes fell in a pothole in the Sheraton parking lot and Dream Job never actually saw him.

Olindo Mare lived in my dorm so why was he allowed on campus and the rest of the players were in South Campus? I always thought it was THEIR MO to live out there and be away from the campus. Even guys like Casey Powell were slumming in Day Hall and i assume he was on close to a full ride.

The whole them vs us part of the campus life always smacked of entitlement to those who played sports vs the kids who didn't. If the athletes didn't want to live there i'm sure the school would figure out a way to carve out a dorm for them to be on campus.

As I remember, during Dino's first year, there were complaints that he wasn't welcoming to former players and Dino even admitted that was intentional as he wanted to limit outside distractions. But he was apparently going to try to be better at that.

Is there validity to the current staff being unwelcoming? We have a rich history of substantial pro talent from the 80s and 90s.

Things look to have changed from when you were on campus to when I was. All football and basketball players were on South as were many other athletes from different sports. A full scholarship player on Main was unheard of.

It's a little whiney. For 10 years there were two football letterman in the AD's office. Wildhack moved all the players into brand new University Village back there. Hard to take seriously players who have not been back being critical of many things that have changed.

This was fall of 94 if i recall with Olindo.
