A 3-step plan to reboot Syracuse football, from former coaches and players

Gotta be honest the alums sound whiny to me and the comments about owning NYS are going to keep us in the basement of the ACC. As for the facility arms race - no doubt we seem to be behind but I have big doubts as to whether or not we will ever catch up.

A lot of that article seemed like a "well back in my day we kicked a-- and took names blah blah blah"

Costs almost nothing to keep a line open to former players. As I said in another thread... invite them back, bring the kids, let them be there. Don’t always just hound them for money. Keep those connections. Eventually it pays off for everyone.

Ever so slight pushback...ideally its the right former players. There are probably a couple players who will remain nameless I want as far from our kids as possible.

I didn’t read the article beyond the beginning that they let you see as a teaser if you’re not a subscriber, but...

We just won 10 games and finished top 15 two years ago. Seems kind of a weird time for an article like this? Last year was a disappointment and a setback but it still feels like to me that we’re a program that’s on the rise. If we had a normal season and played our planned schedule, we looked like a solid bet to have a winning season and a bowl game.

Not to mention Dino’s first recruitment class, if my memory serves me right, was introduced via short video by a legendary alumni per player. I find it hard to believe there’s been little effort for outreach.

Also, why the hell haven’t we kept doing that? A high school end or linebacker being welcomed on social media during signing day by Chandler Jones or Keith Bullock personally? Awesome

I think many of these comments represent more of the 10-15 years post PP and less the last 2-3

Also super curious how many comments about facilities (Manley, Ensly, housing, dome) yet many have not been back. How would they know what’s changed? I thought a bunch of money had been dumped into Manley over the past 5-8 yrs. The pictures certainly look different than when I was there in the very early 2000s

The complaint about the disconnect between alumni and the program is legitimate but I'm pretty sure ADJW is working to fix that, with the party that resulted in the $25 mi donation last year and other future football alumni events planned.

RE: facilities upgrades we obviously know that's still a work in progress overall, and I'm not sure it's realistic for SU to keep up with Clemson/FSU

The bread and butter for SU IMO is to draw in top 35/40 classes every year, redshirt all the players, develop them, and place them in schemes that minimizes the talent disadvantage vs the Clemsons/FSUs/Louisvilles.

What were the 3 steps?

1. Facilities
2. Bring in Alumni
3. ????

After reading the headlines; I won't read that article.

An utter waste of time...

First of all - any former player is more than welcome to tweet their "positive" experiences to uncommitted football prospects B4 they sign( ; "IF" they want to have a "REAL" impact).

Second, "THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL FACILITIES ARMS RACE" will NEVER end. Every school must continuously upgrade their bells and whistles, because your marketing to kids.

Third, NO "REAL STUD" PLAYER who made his mark (at his school) is going to be that "sensitive or needy" that he feels slighted because no-one invited him back, because he has left it all on the field and is continuously successful in other areas of his life post graduation after college.

Please don't get sucked into meaningless dialog on our boards because prospects and their parents read them.

GO ORANGE!

Honestly I don't see it. The practice facility is really nice, we are upgrading the dome significantly, south campus was great my senior year in 06 and visiting friends there in years prior. Athletes housing can be shinier but it doesn't make it better. SU is unique just like many other schools and has really upped it's game facility wise the past twenty years and counting.

Back in my day, basketball players stayed in my dorm. You know, the one with the Stadium/Dome cam... Lawrinson.

My first time getting n an elevator, out steps (hunched over) Danny Schayes.

Freshman year, Marty Headd lived on my floor. Sean Kerins & Sonny Spera (who knocked my high school out of the NYS playoffs in 1980) lived next door to my buddy in ‘81-82.

As a Goon Squad member I moved several players into their first dorm.

BTW: back then, in the entrance of Sadler Hall, there was a great painting/picture of Ernie Davis.

The painting was still there in '87 when I was a freshman. The athlete move to south campus was pretty much complete during my time at SU. I knew a handful of football players and they were all at Skytop, at least the scholarship ones were. I knew a couple of walkons who lived in the dorms.

Its college man noone cares about this stuff. I couldn't imagine living in lavish apartments I know I can't afford after college unless I make 200k. My favorite thing about my Fr dorm room was I could see my grandmothers church on Tipp Hill from it.

The money should got to wellness and recovery coaches. If you go to a road game there aren't many trainers who travel. FB teams are big. I'd chose the recovery room with 10 ice tubs over the fancy one with 5 that you gotta line up for. Pee trough mentalilty right? Trainers are always busy though. Thats one thing I'd make sure to keep up with Clemson on is the number of them on the sidelines.

Housing
Spot on. The facilities themselves are pretty good ... remade dome much better than pretty good. Coaching staff, IMO, tremendous. Three things that would really help. 1. Dedicated housing for team. So much is asked of these guys. They deserve housing that reflects it. 2. Upgraded team dining and nutritional area with more resources for science based nutrition and supplementation. 3. S&C coaches are outstanding. Give them even more resources, including staffing and equipment.

Not sure why we're dismissing the experiences of former players just because we don't like what they have to say. Based on our level of recruiting it seems like they might have a point or two.

They have all that now at Manley.
