After the 50's version of The Jackie Gleason Show ended and he's made a few movies but before his 60's show from Miami Beach, Jackie Gleason decided to try hosting a quiz show, "You're in the Picture", hoping he could have the success Groucho Marx did with "You Bet Your Life". It was a famous disaster, based on the dubious premise of celebrity guests sticking their heads through a picture and having to guess what the picture was about.
Any great comedian is good at rebounding from a joke that falls flat and often the rebound is funnier than any of his written material. The next week it was just Gleason, sitting on an empty stage with an alcoholic "cup of tea" and a cigarette. He apologize for what people saw the week before and made a series of jokes about it and did an extended monologue about show business and his career in it. Both are considered TV classics, one classically bad and the other classically good. This U-Tube post has both:
