LSU
Sophomore Brandon Harris overtook junior Anthony Jennings for the starting job, which was what every Tiger fan wanted to see. But the jury is very much still out.

With the season-opening tune-up game against McNeese State canceled because of weather, Harris had to jump right into games against Mississippi State and Auburn. That LSU won both said very little about Harris. He's completing 68 percent, but they're not going anywhere (6.9 yards per completion), and his passer rating is on the wrong side of 120. LSU's offense went into such a shell late against Mississippi State that the Tigers almost blew a 21-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

He's doing a lovely job of keeping defenses honest on the ground, though. Leonard Fournette has been dominant, but Harris' keepers have also been effective: while taking just one sack, he's rushed 12 times for 119 yards. Even with Fournette, at some point he'll be asked to make a play with his arm, and we don't know that he'll be able to. But so far, so good.

5-2-4 defense with gap pressure. Leave corners 1-v-1 with receivers and help over the top. Even w/ 7 defenders selling out to stop the run I'm not sure we can, but it's the best shot we have.

absolutely have to sell out to stop the run and get to the QB. i'd put 8 in the box, go man to man press and roll the dice, all in. force him to beat us through the air.

(our safeties dont help anyways so you might as well put them in the box :)

you might as well. our corners are going to get beat no matter what so you might as well load up to stop something else

always the chance he just makes bad passes even to wide open guys

something to note about our receivers. Our top returning receiver Travin Dural is an all SEC performer. Super fast, and is used mostly in deep posts, go routes and jet sweeps.

We also have Malachi Dupre, who was a 5* recruit, and the #17 overall player on the 247 composite for the 2013 class. And Tyron Johnson, who was also a 5* recruit and the #27 overall player in the 2014 class.

So while our QB may be untested, he has some pretty dang good targets to help bail him out.

Harris did just that against Auburn, the jury is still very much out on him. I agree with those who say commit to stopping the run and take your chances with the pass.

Harris does have an NFL arm, he spins the ball as well as anyone. I do not know it is his mechanics, adrenaline, inexperience or something else, he has just not shown he can be consistently accurate. His misses against Auburn were not just a matter of a ball being a tad over or under thrown, he missed a couple guys by a time zone.

Harris can run the ball and if you see LSU in the shotgun, unless it is third and long, he will run the read option and keep it about a third of time.

It is a very classic Les Miles team and Miles, despite his success, is a polarizing figure with a very vocal (and somewhat large) minority of LSU fans. LSU has a very big and physical offensive line and while Miles will give lip service to being balanced on offense, he wants to power run the football. Even when they go spread, they still look to run with reverses and read options.

Stop the run and LSU gets out of their comfort zone, that is the book every SEC defensive coordinator has. The question for LSU fans is will Harris develop into a passer where they can be more balanced, or is Harris juts a more athletic version of Jennings, their qb last year.

The QBs from Wake and from CMU were both pretty good at standing in the face of pressure and getting a throw off. Will Harris? Or will he even have to worry about it?

The hope from SU is that he's still so raw in his development, that the zone blitz leads to a couple of picks.

I think Miles is going to be either run, or take shots deep. I don't expect LSU to do a lot in between. They won't let themselves keep this close with Harris inexperience type mistakes.

here is what I would expect out of our passing game:

bubble screens, quick slants, PA to a deep post or go route. not much else

As Harris develops, with Fournette coming back and the receivers you have, it is scary. Next year could be LSU's year. Not saying that this year won't be, but you all have to be drooling over next year already.

I watched some of the Auburn game - LeBron James would have had a tough time catching a few of those balls by the QB. And Auburn wasn't exactly getting much pressure on him.

Not saying he won't have an all-world game against us, but it doesn't matter if your WRs are Jerry Rice & Randy Moss if your quarterback throws like Perry Patterson (look him up).

coming into this year, that has been our thoughts all along. We will lose a few DB's, but we seem to grow them on trees. We will lose our stud MLB to the draft most likely, and we will lose a few key pieces along the O Line. We will return pretty much every skill position player minus Travin Dural at receiver.

we had no clue what to expect coming into this year, but I am pleasantly surprised so far.

thats one of the problems with a guy with Harris' arm strength. We saw the same thing in Jamarcus Russel's first few games, but once he dialed it in, he played himself into the #1 overall pick. I expect Harris will sail some more balls this year, but I also suspect he will make some throws that will have a wow factor as well

that means you only need to throw it about 4 times to get 2-3 tds if we play like last week
