Darabont is a fiend. He consulted with King about making the ending much nastier and tragic, and King ok'd it enthusiastically.

In other news, Darabont wrote the screenplay for the new Godzilla movie in production. Probably the most literate contribution to a monster movie since Faulkner helped with The Thing.
