Cool - I wondered if they kept the old court under there in 2005. Glad it's (kind of) preserved.

That rough reddish surface absolutely destroyed my sweet new pair of Nike Air Go's back in the summer of 1995 when I was at the Big Orange Basketball Camp. I loved those shoes. That horrible surface just ripped the soles to pieces.

Do you have a higher definition version of this picture?

Also, we REALLY need colored seats.

It's hard rubber and very uncomfortable to play/sit on.

Yeah, I figured. Sorry about your shoes.

But I assume it's the original court from when the Dome was built? Someone mentioned 2005, what happened then?

Up until 2005 SU had "astroturf" which was rolled up and put away during basketball season.

When the Field Turf was installed in 2005, it can't be rolled up, so the blue tiles are set up on top of the turf, and the basketball court and the bleachers go on top of the blue tiles.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Once the new Field Turf was installed, SU lost the ability to host the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships every year.

I think his question was about that court. It hadnt been used since the 80's. Why is it even on the ground? They couldnt play on red rubber. Did they really play on a non-wood surface?

The original court was built into the floor in 1980 and can't be removed.

The reference to 2005 was confusing to me, since obviously we were long since playing on a different surface by then. I forgot that we switched to FT shortly after Gross took over.

very interesting. So it is wood?

The original court was a hard rubber "Tartan" surface (state of the art in the late 70's). Nobody liked playing on it because it caused too many knee and ankle problems, so SU started to use a portable wood court several years later.

I think we're on our 4th or 5th different wood court by now. They don't last forever.

Right, Manley got a tartan court in 1978 and the Dome's original court was the same surface. SU started trucking a portable hardwood court between the two venues in 1985 or 1986, then they installed a permanent hardwood court in Manley in about 1994 (but the tartan practice courts still surrounded the new wood court) and the portable court stayed on at the Dome. It's been replaced a couple times.

When SU installed the new Dome turf in 2005, they apparently didn't need to tear up the old court and the track (aside from a couple utility duct modifications, which can be seen in ATL's photo.
