A great shot of the dome (in the nude)

bravo

Right, Manley got a tartan court in 1978 and the Dome's original court was the same surface. SU started trucking a portable hardwood court between the two venues in 1985 or 1986, then they installed a permanent hardwood court in Manley in about 1994 (but the tartan practice courts still surrounded the new wood court) and the portable court stayed on at the Dome. It's been replaced a couple times.

When SU installed the new Dome turf in 2005, they apparently didn't need to tear up the old court and the track (aside from a couple utility duct modifications, which can be seen in ATL's photo.
Now is the time to install the wiring near the middle of the field for basketball games played at the 50 yard line. I could see Dr Gross dressed an a ninja, sneaking in late one night to do the necessary work.

He is so close right now to his dream...

just a side note, wouldnt it be cool if instead of playing in the middle of the dome like has been brought up before... why not get the buffers out and clean up the old court, get JB in an early 80's suit, bring back the pearl cursive uni's, and shape up malachi's hair a bit and BOOM! Now that would be a site to see vs Coach K and Duke.

The nice thing about this picture and some others that I've seen is that it gives the relative sizes of the basketball court versus the football field. While you don't think about the difference in square footage, it is really a big difference. That accounts for the fact that basketball arenas typically hold fewer fans than football stadiums. If you are way up in the cheap seats or in student seating, you almost have to bring binoculars to the game!

I was fortunate enough to play 2 sectional championship games and a state championship game in the dome a few years ago. The size of the dome when you walk out on the football field is astounding. I know it's a smaller football stadium but when you are actually down on the turf it seems huge. Can't imagine playing in the super dome or a larger venue like that indoors.

The dome is really ugly, it looks like concrete just threw up all over the place. It would be really nice to see a basketball only arena, even if it doesn't hold 30+ thousand people.

But it's OUR concrete that just threw up all over the place. :)

Tell that to players who play in front of 30k. They could care less about the concrete. The minute we build a smaller arena we lose an important distinction. An arena can be built to provide 30k good seats if done correctly.

I feel bad for the Duke players that play in front of a mere few thousand on their home court. The dome is very out dated, the seats are awful, the concourse is awful. That said it is cool when there are 30+ there, but how often do we get 30k? How many times is it 15-20k? I'm sure the players will be fine playing in front of 20k.

You're missing the point. Yes the dome is outdated and it will be great to get things updated, believe me, but the players don't care about the seats or the fire code violations in the concourses. The current players would love playing in a spanking new 20k arena. But going forward, we'd lose the distinction of selling recruits on playing in the nation's largest on campus facility... and we'd lose the ability to woo elite recruits for a big weekend game when 30k are guaranteed to pack the house. The Dome has its drawbacks, but its sheer size has helped lure in big talent over the years. We might be able to create a similar wow factor with a new arena... it is certainly debatable depending on the implementation... but thanks to your visionary mayor that opportunity has sailed.
