About the backup pg minutes. Ennis cant play the whole game and will need some rest here and there. Against pressure teams is when Cooney and MG will earn their imaginary paychecks. Cooney looked much improved and more comfortable. MG to me didnt really get a good read off him but these guys need to play important minutes, and are key pieces imo.

I bet MG sees about 5 to 8 mpg as the backup pg. I know Ennis is only a freshmen, but he might be too good to take out. I would not be surprised to see him avg 33 to 35 mpg in ACC play. If we can stay even with teams while he is on the bench we will be fine. We only need our backup to be about as good Triche was last year when MCW came out. I really think Ennis is going to be the man. he may not be as good defensively as MCW, but he looks so much more polished in every other area.

Boeheim has always found a way to operate. You know the drill. Take the pg out at like the 13 minute mark, take it under the 12 minute tv timeout, plus an extra 2-3 minutes during the commercials, then maybe another two minutes. yeah it's about 4 minutes in the stat book but he rests for about 6-8 minutes depending on dead balls while he's sitting.

Yeah, if anything I bet 33 minutes in ACC play is too low. Jonny Flynn played 35.5 minutes in all games as a freshmen.

I agre in general this is the biggest concern. Not PG play but PG play other than Ennis. I think MikeG will be the guy after watching the Canadian games but he will need help and things will look different without Ennis running the show.

If this is the biggest concern we can have...things are looking very good :)

I can't contribute in any meaningful way to this discussion other than to say we have an HOF coach. In JB We Trust.

What's the point of joining a message board then? I mean, we all could take your post and copy/paste it on every topic there is. Sounds kinda boring.

Pray Ennis stays healthy. We really don't have a legitimate backup point.

Agree. I don't want to see much of Silent G or others masquerading as PGs for extended minutes. Fine generally in preseason but I want to avoid seeing our guys getting stripped at halfcourt at all costs, especially come ACC ball.

I think MG is going to surprise alot of people this year. He will be servicable as back up PG, which is nuts, the kid is 6'-6", even bigger than MCW. I wouldn't say he is a natural PG, but he is a very smart player and he will be able to run the team for as long as he has to each game. He will also play some SG, and if he needed to, he would play one of the forward positions. He is versatile and judging by the Canada games, he is willing to take on whatever role he needs to, to help the team win. He is a very important cog in this machine, and I am excited to have him as part of this program. And no, I am not his dad. I can't even spell his last name.

I believe the phrase you're looking for is "watch how Boeheim do."

I think you probably missed the point of that post.

Agree.

I am more curious with how our halfcourt offense will run, then I am worried about our ball handling.

5 of our 6 frontcourt players could bring isolation offense. We know CJ, Grant and Dajuan will bring isolation offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Roberson bring some even as a fresh. Rak may have only drove left in canada, but when he wanted to drive he did instead of being forced to pick up his dribble and pass it back out like Fab Melo, Rick Jackson and Arinze Onuaku in recent years.

Gbinije Fair and Grant all have the potential to dribble head up, back down the defender when he plays off of them, blow by their man into open space when he plays them tight, and the height to make smart passes out of doubles when Ennis is out.

I'm not worried at all about the backup PG question. Ennis is going to be a stud and will play 35 mpg, so we're just talking really about 5 mpg, which btwn MikeG, Cooney, and Bus, someone will be able to handle those minutes. We're talking about such a small amount of time, we don't need anyone to step up with star caliber performances. Just to be adequate for 5 mpg. I think a bigger question is what can we expect from the SG position this year. That's where we really need someone to step up and play 40 quality minutes. Especially given that we were not exactly a scoring juggernaut last year! That being said, I'm optimistic that someone will emerge. When you have this much talent spread across this many number of options, you know at least a couple of guys are going to step up. Just as it's really unlikely that every player demonstrates the ability to step up and plays like all conference studs, it's equally unlikely that everyone fizzles. Btwn MikeG, Cooney, BJ and Bus, we should be in good shape. But I do think this is one of the 2 open questions that will determine how far we go. How much improvement do we get at center, and how well can we replace Triche?

any reasonably competent coach can manage game minutes in normal situations; that is not the problem

the concern is over foul trouble or (shudder) injury. As loaded as this team is, it is still just an ill-timed TE ankle turn away from a second division ACC finish and a trip to the NIT

sounds like you are giving jb a get out of jail pass if he screws up this plethora of balance and talent. anything less than final four should be a terminal offense. I look for unhappiness among the rank and file. too many nba players to share minutes.

if any team's one and only PG goes down with injury, then what coach wouldn't get a pass?

there are only three sure things in this world: death, taxes, and Igor's burning resentment toward JB

Yeah, it's really easy to reach the Final Four these days, particularly with the wealth of talent spread around as it is. JB's measly four Final Four appearances is shameful. Rupp got there all of 6 times, Knight 5 times and Calhoun 4 times. But those guys were real basketball coaches and didn't rely on gimmicks or the cosmic intervention that delivered Carmelo Anthony to Syracuse.
