I'll throw this out there for discussion purposes...

right now part of me thinks that, relative to expectations, Robe will have a much better season than Rico

we all expect much less out of our senior Tyler but if he brings it every night and has any offensive flash, we will be raving about his game.

Tyler the younger is blowing up with preseason smoke, and while he certainly has the fire to back it up, he wont be a big man who can also shoot, he'll be a wing that's expected to shoot. an off game here or there and we'll question his true upside. likewise on D, he be spending much more time on the wing and will be susceptible to players with faster footspeed and with Chuky behind him the importance of his rim protection game is greatly diminished.

Don't see it that way at all. I see more opportunities for Lydon to utilize his size and skill set against smaller players. He will be able to back down smaller defenders and shoot over pretty much anyone. Honestly, with the weapons around him, he will be able to be very efficient because he should get a ton of open looks with the slashers and shooters we have. On defense, I see more opportunities for him to get blocks. What do people do when they face someone who is 7'2? They usually shy away and allow the weak side defender to get into the play more often. I understand your thought process, but I don't see it going down like that at all. Lydon may not even lead the team in scoring, but I think he will be our most efficient player all year.

I tend to agree, at least about Lydon. If you look at the NBA, shooting bigs are valuable, but the current way to neutralize them is to stick a smaller quicker player on them. Even if they get bullied in the post, the resulting mismatch is actually not generally worth pursuing because it takes you out of these normal flow of your offense. The same principle drives the "switch everything" philosophy. Until I see lydon put it on the floor consistently or beat up smaller guys in the post, I'll tend to think that playing him at the 3 would be a mistake.

On D, though, I think he'll so great. Shot blocking forwards are super great in the zone as long as they have the agility to reach the corners and recover which I have faith that Lydon has.

so I'm the only one who thinks TL is being overhyped beyond his actual ability to play the wing?

ponderous

You're not the only one. He's good and can be very good. But there is a huge difference from being the 3rd or 4th option to being a primary. Fortunately we will have a strong set of scorers to distribute the load. But his effectiveness last year came from being a stretch 4 (often while playing C on D). Taking bigger players out on the floor and getting open 3's is his best asset. He showed some glimpses of putting the ball on the floor and getting around big guys to get to the basket. Can he do that against more athletic 3's defending him, I'm not sure. Luckily now we have other options at the 3, so TL can remain a stretch 4 who can also work on his post-up game.

Nope. The majority of his 3s seemed to come off pick and pops. To me he's a versatile PF who can post up, hit the 3 off pick and pops, and can face up and get to the basket decently...for a PF.

I think he's out of position as a SF at this point, and White gets most of those minutes.

If you read certain insider posts and some of the articles posted, I think the coaches view White as more of a two than the fans do.

I actually like Lydon at the 3. He can shoot over top of smaller guys with his high release, and at the end of the year he started showing a post game. He will have size mismatches all day if the coaches play him there, and I think they will. He and Roberson will be on the court together a good amount IMO.
