A Video Inside the Huddle

Tampa 2 is completely opposite of what we used to run so growing pains are expected but it definitely sounds like there are some struggling to pick up the new defense. These coaches are not pu$$y footing around. Pretty blunt and intense. Which coach is that, Brian Ward?

Defense was an issue last season.

It will be an issue this season.

Lack of dominant DEs, LBs that will have to cover deeper in the secondary, and an offense that will apparently keep the defense on the field much of the game.

Right. That's the hope - we out score our opponents.

It sounds fine in theory, but it is maddening when your own defense can't stop anybody.

Last year the offense was good enough to have won at least two more games - probably three.

But the defense couldn't get off the field.

So, I'm excited about the offense but it will be just as tough if we lose again because the defense can't get off the field.

The practice they had for the students on Thursday reports are all saying the Defense took it to the Offense and that the Offense could do nothing against them. All we need this Defense to do is get a few turn overs and bend, but don't break. Reading most of the reports from spring ball I'm seeing INT's, fumbles, and sacks. They all seem like good signs from spring. Now if this doesn't improve by mid fall practice then I might be a bit worried.

Actually, that's right.

Coach Babers said the defense was very good at Manley.

Hey, nobody is rooting for the defense more than I am - I hope with some experience and with a more conservative approach we will see much improved defense this fall.

That along with what we expect to see on offense would be great.

The style of play puts a lot of pressure on the D. We'll play so fast on O and there will be 3 and outs (as much as we'd like to believe it will never happen again). D won't get much rest time.

Opponents are probably going to attack us like never before because they'll think they need to keep up on the scoreboard.

Depth isn't great, but hopefully a short term issue.

Defense just needs to make the most of their opportunities and tighten up in the red zone. Between the 20s, I think teams are going to basically move the ball at will. People just need to be patient with it, because the idea is to prevent 7, then go out and attack and score 7.

defense couldnt get off the field last year to win a game and we left 4-5 wins on the field. if the offense scores 10 more points we are fine. it may also put some teams in attack mode where the tampa 2 shines the best at creating TO's

I was messing with you a little. I don't think Baber's system is defense friendly, but it can be very very good at forcing teams to throw - and the Tampa 2 is good at creating TO's.

In other words - if we score a lot, it will apply a certain kind of defense of its own.

I think this year - the defense will lose us a game or two again.
