ABC/ESPN goes dark on DirecTV due to carriage dispute

Can't take any chances tomorrow I sadly had to cancel Directvstream and add Fubu.

Well trying to cancel. Xfinity still hasn't canceled my cable since I dropped my box off a few weeks ago and the Directv folks seem pretty adamant to not refund the rest of the month and cancel either. The T Mobile Home internet I tried was a struggle to cancel as well dropping off the box wasn't enough.

If this effects you checkout Fubo TV free trial. They have all ESPN networks and YES

Yeah, I still have Uverse and am blacked out.

I think that free trial is an old wives tale at this point sure they mention it on the website but its nowhere to be found at checkout. I thought I would get the trial and have 7 days but nope it was a lie. Wish I did Sling.

Directv won't refund me the rest of September or my pay period I'm like 12 days in pretty upset and I might dispute the charge. Missing the game isn't an option and my morning is busy I'm playing hockey for 2 hours and will get home and showered right at kick maybe a couple mins late I can't wait any longer. 20 dollar inconvenience credit is insulting.

Have a feeling the channels will be restored in the morning in the chat they said soon but I can't risk it.

This link says $30 dollars off first month and after clicking start watching and then next it says 7 days free.

Good on Hulu Live.

Signed up with Hulu Live yesterday. With their highest tier plus additional Entertainment channels, it's still cheaper than my Directv bill. I will keep Directv until MLB is over since I have the MLB package for my mom. After that, I'm gone after 30 years as a customer.

I created an account a few weeks ago and then didn't pay went with Directv couldn't chose it was close so might have voided this.

I might try another one in a month for baseball playoffs we'll see.

Have some international work trips coming up wonder if any of these services work abroad might have to learn how to use a VPN.

You may need to try an incognito window to get the free trial offer to show up (and maybe a new account), it didn’t want to show for me the second or third time I clicked the link.

That's interesting. I still get ABC.
I am in the Chicago area, the local ABC here is owned and operated by Disney so we get screwed. Same with people in NY, LA, Philly, San Fran, Houston, Fresno. I think that’s all of them. It’s a joke

If you do end up using VPN, recommend NORD or EXPRESS. They work great for me in the Philippines and every where else we travel in Asia.

I happily left comcast and haven’t looked back.

Download Rocket Money, it'll cancel all your subscriptions fast and without a hitch, no hassles with websites or phone calls with customer service

Your ABC affiliate may not be Disney, it could be Tegna or Nexstar who run a lot of local channels and use a network's programming

On Friday, the company said it was offering existing DirecTV via Satellite, DirecTV via Internet DirecTV Stream and U-Verse customers the option to take advantage of promotional pricing from streaming TV platforms Fubo and Sling TV so they can watch the conclusion of the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the start of “Monday Night Football,” both of which are carried on ESPN.

Customers who sign up for Fubo’s Pro or Elite with Sports Plus plans will get their first seven days of service for free, and score $30 off their first month of either package. DirecTV says it will also chip in for Fubo by providing its existing satellite, streaming and U-Verse customers with a $30 bill credit.

Alternatively, DirecTV and U-Verse customers can sign up for Echostar-owned Sling TV, which offers ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN 3 and a handful of other channels in its Sling Orange package, priced between $40 and $45 per month, depending on where a subscriber lives. As with the Fubo offer, DirecTV says it will chip in $30 through a bill credit when a customer signs up for Sling TV’s Sling Orange package to access the Disney-owned channels.

“This is a small way to help you stay connected to your sports and entertainment while we work with Disney to reach a new agreement,” a DirecTV spokesperson told customers in a statement.

Disney-owned channels have been unavailable to DirecTV and U-Verse customers since September 1, when a distribution agreement between the companies lapsed without a new agreement in place.

While carriage disputes have historically focused on fees paid by cable and satellite companies to programmers like Disney for their channels, things are different this time around, with DirecTV saying it wants the ability to place Disney-owned channels in genre-based programming packages that can be sold to subscribers at potentially lower rates.

Typically, Disney forces cable and satellite companies to offer channels like ESPN and FX in the base programming package offered by a distributor, which drives up the overall cost of the package, DirecTV says. But Disney proved it was willing to sell access to its sports channels separately when it agreed to participate in Venu Sports, a streaming joint venture formed with Fox Corporation and Warner Bros Discovery that aimed to offer sports-inclusive channels like Fox, ABC, ESPN, Fox Sports 1, TBS, TNT and Tru TV for around $50 — far below the cost of a traditional pay TV package.

DirecTV says Disney should extend the ability to sell channels around genres to its cable and satellite partners, and is holding out for a deal that will alow DirecTV and U-Verse to do just that.
