I'm reading about a possible flip from Wisconsin who may have academic problems. I believe that happened to a recruit from Stanford last year.

I'm willing to concede that we are not at the same level as Stanford or Duke academically, but I'd like to think that we are at the same level as B1G teams. Does anyone know what SU's academic requirements are for an athletic scholarship and where I might be able to find the same for other schools?

Can't speak for the current standards, but previously it was FB/BB- if they are NCAA qualifiers, SU admits them. Other sports, if they were "impact recruits", the same held true.

Not sure about all schools, but SU does 2nd and 3rd choice of colleges for admission and that is how a lot of athletes end up in CFS/CRS.

I know Stanford is tougher on all athlete admits, and that's how SU got West and Mungwa.

When I was a grad student at Duke back in the '80s, I was dating a girl who worked in Admissions. She told me that admission of athletes was "blind", i.e., they were considered by the admissions committee without being identified as getting an athletic scholarship.

Definitely not the case at SU as scholarship student-athletes are identified.

I used to work in the admissions office for an SEC school. The President of the institution was allowed a number of special admits for students that might not qualify for admission through the regular admissions process. These admits were given special consideration if they possessed a special skills that contributed to the culture of the institution. Of course, they had more spaces set aside for student athletes; however, they definitely admited musicians and other special students into the University using this route. The institution had to keep track of the number of students admitted through this process and couldn't got over the set number.

I think that's standard most places, and frankly that is what colleges should do. Lots of students are able to flourish with the opportunity to attend a school and take advantage of the resources available.

Did you really believe that? Do you still believe that? I can believe that they have higher academic standards for their athletes relative to other schools, but there is no way you can convince me that all of their scholarship athletes are assessed by Admissions on a "blind" basis. Unless she meant "blind" in the way that they get moved to the "Accepted" pile, as in "turning a blind eye".

I have to agree with Bill. It's very rare for a recruited athlete at any school that emphasizes academics, especially the Ivies, to be able to get it on their own. The percentage isn't zero, but it's not 50 by any stretch of the imagination.

It was true in the '80s. Go back to those rosters and see the quality of those classes. With both pro football and basketball now allowing early drafts, it's probably not true. In those days, Coach K would refuse to put a championship banner in the rafters until all players in a graduating class earned their degrees. With one-and-dones, he can't do that anymore.

BTW, I agree with the "blind eye" comment. She dated me.
:p
