ACC 2016 Tourney in Verizon Center

Andy Katz ‏@ESPNAndyKatz3m
ACC announces 2016 men's basketball tournament will be at Verizon Center in Washington D.C. ('14 and '15 are in Greensboro). Brooklyn next?

The gravitational pull of the Syracuse basketball program is starting to take effect.

Just one guy's vote, but I'd rather the ACC Hoops Tourney stay in DC as opposed to Brooklyn.
DC's area around Verizon Center is made for this event.

Priority should be MSG ... (gap) ... DC ... (HUGE gap) (another gap) ... Charlotte.

Truthfully, I'd rather it be in Boston (or even Philly) over Brooklyn.

I have also heard the idea of having first 2-3 rounds annually in Greensboro/Charlotte and having the ACC Final Four advancing to MSG (2 games during day on Saturday, Final on Sunday early afternoon).

This would work "around" the Big East-MSG dilemma until the contract ends.

just want to clarify - Verizon Center, like games at MSG and games in Atlantic City, NJ are considered SU home games, right?
If they are playing georgetown, then yes.

You may get your chance to do that again since that's one of the crazy expansion to 16 teams scenarios for when ND joins full time. That scenario has Navy joining for football only because ND would want them and, Navy won't want their other sports in the ACC, since they basically get murdered in the Patriot League right now. So, we'll have G'Town join for the other sports since they play D-1AA football.

I didn't say it made sense. I just said it was one scenario.

I know this has probably nothing to do with it, but doesn't this feel like a giant FU to the Big 10 and Maryland!

Good get, note that the site selection for after '16 has not been mentioned. Whisper is that the bouncing ball has a good shot at landing in the NYC basket for '17...for at least 3-5 years. Details now being worked out...but movement has begun.

More conference news coming soon.

It's Good to be 'Cuse!! The Order of the 'Cuse Orange...

So--ND would be #15 in all sports (including FB), Navy would be #16 in FB, and GTown would be #16 in all other sports?

I just can't see ND signing on as a full member. Everything seems to be working out well for them in the set up which begins next football season. Why would they want to have to compete with FSU for a spot in the playoffs? Last year showed that they can, as an independent, sneak an inferior team into the championship conversation.

I think the Barclay's Center is a decent alternative, if MSG is not available in a given year.

Have you ever been to Barclays Center?

Place is amazing. If not MSG, Barclays would be a great choice. As would Verizon Center to be honest.

As long as it comes north of the Carolinas, everyone should be happy.

I don't think a lot of people will be happy until it comes to NY. I know I won't.

Of course there's still a chance that Louisville joins, and Maryland doesn't leave which pushes the conference to 16 in hoops and 15 in football until notre dame makes their final decision.

Maryland can't afford to move and their fans already don't want to. Adding the ACC tourney in their back yard will only add to their fans displeasure.

What's the hotel situation there?

If we're looking after the interests of all 15-16 schools, DC is probably the best compromise. NYC is a selfish, albeit fun, destination.

Wow... That is seriously amazing. No ACC school in DC area... but play the Conference tourney there? That is a a major win for the ACC schools that are north of the Mason/Dixon line.

I disagree. Boston, Philly NJ, I would agree. However, MSG has a special place in college basketball history. Plus, for the last 20 years, the best college conference has played the best conference tournament at MSG. That should continue.
Which invokes the most excitement:
The ACC semi-finals, this Friday, featuring UNC vs Duke and Syracuse vs Loiusville, at:
Greensboro, or
The Verizon Center in Washington, DC, or
Madison Square Garden, the world's most famous arena.

Easy choice.

What happens when MSG gets demolished in the silly Manhattan wars?

Greensboro is a hulking arena in the middle of a parking lot in a smallish town. DC is a pretty happening place.
