This, according to the Empire Center (conservative think tank).
http://www.empirecenter.org/Documents/PDF/RB-Taxpayer-Migration-Final.pdf

Per this analysis, between 2001-2009 there was a Net out-migration of New Yorkers to the states below. The actual numbers are likely higher as they only include taxpayers (e.g. exclude children) and would undercount the actual numbers of folks who relocated since these are net numbers. Looking at ACC states the net out-migration for the period was:

FL - 338,184
NC - 106,767 (has replaced FL as top state to relocate)
GA - 77,033
VA - 53,749
SC - 36,280
MD - 28,600
Combined - 640,000

Wonder what percent are SU fans. Keep it apolitical s'il vous plait.

well -- I know quite a few classmates and friends currently reside in NC and SC, so those numbers are not too surprising

You implying SU should relocate to tobacco road? Shorter commutes for the players.:)

My parents are huge Cuse fans and are moving to Georgia. Im thinking about moving to the Alpharetta area where I have a friend who recently got relocated to and loves it. He also tells me on Cuse gamedays, he sees alot of Cuse gear.

If 4% of them are Cuse fans and none have kids, you'd have 25,000 Cuse fans in the region. Or rather 25,000 new cuse fans since 2001. Extrapolate for the years 2010 and 2011 and you can add another 5,750 (144,000 x 4%).

Just as a boilerplate number lets say there were already that number in place before 2001 due to previous migration, random interest, etc. so there is another 30,000 roughly.

If you assume that Cuse fans are generally in families together and that the families have an average of 0.5 kid per (to account for not all these fans are married, etc) then you have another 15,200 (60,750 / 2 x 0.5).

So the total could be:

30,000 (In Situ pre 2001)
25,000 (Migrated from 2001 - 2009)
5,750 (Assumed migration from 2009 - Present)
15,200 (Rough estimate of kids associated with the above)
----------
75,950 (Total)

So maybe 80,000 or so in ACC country. Not bad.

Then you could add on migration from (primarily) other states in the northeast who are alumni or random fans. Now you're approaching, or will soon approach 100,000. Of course the primary unknown variable in the guesstimate is the validity of the 4% figure.

I was in the ATL for the night of the championship in '03. Found a viewing party and there were TONS of SU fans representing. KU as well but I was shocked how many SU fans showed up at this particular sports bar. Close to a 100 I would guess.

I am among 2 in Florida, my wife and myself. When we are lucky enough to see Syracuse play in the state of Florida it amazes us how many Syracuse fans are at the games. We have seen Cuse play USF at their arena and also seen Cuse play Florida at the Time Warner Center in Tampa. The crowds seemed to be 1/2 Cuse fans and we were certainly more boisterous than the USF Fans or Gators.

The chants of "Lets GO ORANGE!" were deafening and the number of people dressed out in Syracuse gear was astounding. Unfortunately we weren't able to see them this year as they don't have any games in the state of Florida. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to catch them for a game in New Orleans in April (wink)

Moved here to CharlotteNC 14 months ago, & I can vouch for the OttoMan Empire being a major force in this city.
Wearing Cuse gear is an invitation for conversation from fellow SU, UConn, and especially now, other ACC fans.
Can't wait for the ACC schedule to kick-in...our timing was perfect! ;)

FL/GA = twice the house for 1/2 the price as NY.

I moved to Raleigh area from Ithaca in 2006. I have already posted, several times in the past, my perspectives of what it's like being a SU alum/fan down here (most recently see here).

One great aspect is that CBB down here is king. Sure, there's support for UNC, Duke, NCSU in FB, but the real passion in BB. And the natives appreciate the game, understand it, and are willing to admit a particular school's squad is good when it indeed is. In 09-10 and now again this year, I had several strangers strike up casual conversations with me at check-out lines, at the barber shop, or in coffee shops (when I have worn my SU garb) commenting on how good the BB team is.

At those rates should be worried that in a decade there may not be any Cuse fans left in Syracuse?

Putting it another way, there will be no unsold tickets at any ACC BB game from Maryland south when the Cuse is in the house. Our initial excursion to NC State proved that.

In the house - Omigod!

Outside of that census figure...been living in various Charlotte burbs for some 17 years now...

moved back to rochester from tidewater (norfolk/va beach) and thrilled that i did.

I moved down here to Durham after I left the Navy because the wife is from here. The 'Cuse population down here in the triangle is tremendous. Outside of the Dean Dome and Cameron Indoor we are going to own ACC arenas.

"Conservative think tank?" Isn't that an oxymoron? I would not trust their numbers.
:)
In this instance I am familiar with the demographer who ran the numbers and am pretty confident in his abilities.

Our student body is shifting more South (and West) as well. We're grabbing a lot more students from Virginia/Maryland/Georgia/Florida.

Yup, SU ain't stupid. While the northeast will always maintain a very large population base, mostly due to huge concentrations of folks around Boston, NYC, Philly and DC, the long-term growth of the region won't compare to the south and west. Positioning ourselves as a northern outpost in a mid-Atlantic centered conference makes all the sense in the world, short of moving the campus to Manhattan. ;)
