ACC favors new rules for title game

"If the NCAA lifted its title-game requirements, Swofford said the ACC would consider having the top two teams in the league play for the ACC championship, in addition to maintaining divisions, but not requiring teams to play every opponent in their division."

I'd like to see Swofford's actual quotes, because as written this doesn't entirely make sense. Why maintain divisions if (a) you're taking the top 2 teams for the championship game (assuming "top 2" means regardless of division), and (b) you're not requiring teams to play everyone in their division.

Unless by "maintaining divisions" he means more than two = pods. Either that, or just lining up 1-14, would be cool.

yeah, what does a division accomplish if you dont play everyone in it and the guy who finishes on top, may not get the invite to the champ game anyway??

so it looks good in the paper?? ahh no.

unless they mean that they can change divisions every year? split em in 2 and have at it?

maybe allow the 12 team 2 division format to stay but create a separate set of rules for the 14?

i just hope that whatever they do, they make the bevo get to at least 12...

you need 2 divisions to have the champ game.. why that is a rule is another question..

That's the rule that Swofford apparently wants changed. It's a stupid, arbitrary rule (12 team minimum, 2 divisions) that caused a good deal of the conference realignment we've seen over the past 20 years.

It'd be typically NCAA that they'd abolish it after dozens of schools have been impacted by it and realignment has finally settled down.

:bang:

Yup. As has been pointed out, it's a dumb requirement. The only requirement should be that you have some legitimate method of determining your champion, or in the case of a championship game, your two championship contenders. If you just throw 14 teams in a hat, and play a 8 or 9 game schedule, the top two teams are legitimate enough.

1-14 and 9 games so now we all get to play schools more often instead of seeing them here in the Dome every 12 years. The heck with the championship game, first place goes the the playoffs. Nobody shows up for these stupid things anyways and it is ALWAYS an embarrassment to the ACC having half full stadiums for these "championship" games.

The biggest battle other than the NCAA may be Clemson/FSU with this since they always play USCe and Florida and it really hurts their OOC options.
