In fact, Bobby Bowden spoke to the press about it before there was an official vote. But VT was never going to sit still and allow anybody to get into the ACC ahead of it without a fight. So VT pulled every political string it had, which lead to UVA refusing to vote to go to 12 unless VT was voted in as #10. That could happen only because some ACC schools wanted VT in the ACC ahead of BC or Cuse.

VT was added as the 10th ACC member. Immediately after, Miami was voted in as #11. And then there was the delay because schools were split over #12.

Boeheim was on record as being pro-BE, and BC was campaigning hard for the ACC. Tranghese specifically campaigned for Syracuse to stay BE. So the next year, BC became the 12th.

If BC had stayed, the ACC would have then offered Pitt or WVU.
