Regular season winner gets a bye to the CFP? Champ game is #2 vs. #3? Maybe a final four in the last week of the regular season?

All ridiculous machinations being considered just to preserve a CFP spot. This sport seems intent on becoming more and more of a mockery in the name of collegiate greed.

You can’t ask teams to play 2 extra games to determine the conference champion. And asking the 2nd and 3rd best teams to play in the game is a travesty.

I think the whole bye thing and the issue of what to do ih the losers in coverfence championship games is best solved by expanding the playoff to 16 teams and getting rid of the conference championship games.

You can’t ask fans to travel a bunch of times, and have one of them a pretty meaningless championship game. Teams that get a bye are at a disadvantage. And figuring out who gets byes has been a mess anyway.

Just get rid of them. They are useless once you start going with an extended playoff system.

You’d think this is the kind of thing that someone leaks to get attention to squash a stupid idea. But nope, there’s the ACC Commish proudly talking about it.

Go to 24 teams. Scrap conference championship games. If your ranked, your worthy to have a shot at a title.

Top 8 teams get a first round bye. 5 weeks of extra football. Which is the same amount of weeks as it is now if you include the conference championship game.

Based on a quick google search, FCS has 24 teams, D2 has 28 teams, and D3 has 40 teams. Yet D1 with the most popularity and money/viewership just increased to 12 from 4!!!

Move to 16-team playoff. No more conf title games. Make that weekend round 1.

There doesn't need to be a conference championship game. 24 team playoff is too many. If you give 8 teams a bye and have the other 16 teams play, that would require them to play 5 more games to win the national championship which is just rediculous. 16 team playoff makes sense to me. Nobody gets byes. But the best teams get better seeding. That is enough advantage. That requires each team to play a max of 4 games to win it. Some already need to play 4 games to win it as is with the current 12 team system and the byes. The P4 conferences will all likely get at least 2 teams in.

College football, where everything's made up and the winning doesn't matter.
Soon they're determine the conference champ by votes/power ratings instead of record, especially since there are so many teams in the conference.

Or better yet, electoral votes depending on how many schools are in the state. "The great state of North Carolina gives its 4 votes for Clemson.".

It’s all an attempt to preserve the revenue from a “championship game”, while eliminating the risk of a team that would have been in the playoff getting knocked out of it by losing. It’s yet another example of college football being led by greedy dopes who can’t work together - so instead of working together to make dollars they fight each other viciously over a dime.

A alternate take would be that as stupid as this idea is, the people proposing it are just trying to work within a completely broken system to come up with the best possible bad idea. When you’ve evolved into a broken business model and there’s no interest on the part of those who benefit the most from it (SEC & Big Ten) to change it - the ideas out of the other conferences are going to look moronic. It’s less the fault of the ACC, more the fault of short term time preference imbeciles running the big two conferences.

Starting in 2026 the Big 10 and SEC will make all decisions regarding the football championship. 2025 is the last year voting has to be unanimous in determining voting for anything. Forget about what’s fair, it will be what’s best for the Big TWO.

Just pick the national champion in August before any games are played. Then let that team tour around the country playing exhibition games and showing off their trophy. Oh, and pay kids millions of dollars.

Why do we need to limit who has a chance to win a national championship? I understand the top teams will continue to win it. By why do we have to limit the playoffs to 9% of college teams? I’m not saying expand to 68. But at least open up spots to give the lower level teams a chance. Professional teams allow 40-50% of the teams into the postseason. Why do college kids who aren’t perfect only allow 9%?

Because there are not only 32 college teams or whatever. And in comparison to others sports, because playing a game of football is different than playing a game of basketball for example.

I vote for one of Miami, Clemson or Florida State is required to go to the ACC championship game every year. It’s only fair.
Refs make sure that happens by default
