It’d be the Most Syracuse Thing ever -

if we had football coaches’ sons actually being PWO’s to legally get around the 85 cap,

but we never did that in hoops with either of the HC’s kids, to try to put more scholarship talent around them.
Even though that was always a bigly board discussion point.

In the 1950's and 60's there were no limits.

In 1973, the NCAA capped scholarships at 105.

Down to 95 in 1978.

Down to the current 85 in the early 90's.

I believe in 1959 SU had maybe 35 on the team and there was no unlimited substitution Each player played both offense and defense. They would substitute the whole team. I’ve seen it written that the second best team in 1959 was SU’s second team

You are correct. They used to say the starters were the #1 team in the nation and the 2nd string was the #2 nation. What a year the 1959 team was.
