I have to say I am happy with what I saw today. Never mind the forgettable offense in the 1st Half, I like that our staff went to work this week and made some drastic changes.

- Permanent switch to the 3-4? Bullough did a good job laying off of the kamakazie blitzes. I could be wrong, but I don't think I saw 1 corner or safety blitz. It looked like he really dumbed things down, and sometimes that's a good thing. This defense has talent, and looked much more reactionary today, rather then playing slow because they we're thinking. Good job Chuck.

- Moved Ashton to wide out, to get Estime on the field. Brisly went from getting a handful of plays a game to not coming off the field. First off i have to give to to AB for being a team player. He went from the leading receiver to not catching a ball, but still doing a great job blocking for Estime on those bubble screens. Kudo's to GMC for making the move even if it meant moving your most productive receiver. Recognized we needed another play maker, even if it meant sacrificing some receptions from a proven commodity.

- Looked like Cornelius replaced Kobena, or at least in the 1st half. I didn't see Kobena on the field? I always liked AC, and think he can be a productive player for us.

- Hodge played the whole game at one of the ILB positions, and had a pretty good game from what i saw from the stands.

- McDonald made some good halftime adjustments. Recognized we could beat them on the short stuff so fed Estime the whole 2nd half with a bunch of bubble screens. Hunt went from not being able to complete a pass in the 1st quarter, to having one of his best halves of football in the 2H. McDonald has shown the ability to make some nice adjustments in a few games this year. Clemson, NCST, and today stand out.

Most of the credit i have to give to Shafer and Bullough. It's easy for a team to start questioning you after getting drubbed 56-0. Coming out and competing like that showed that the kids want to play for him. Going to be an interesting end to the season with some winnable ball games. This was a step in the right direction

Especially sticking with the 3-4, which was ravaged against GT. Wake repeatedly tried to attack the perimeter, and we had it covered every time.

your right especially sticking with the 3-4. i still didn't think we had the personnel to play a straight up 3-4, but maybe we have a different plan for it. this is nothing like the old Steelers 3-4, it almost seems like they are giving the old 3-4 principles a whole new twist. were not seeing the jumbo sized DT's, and were definitely not seeing the James Harrison sized OLB's. Were obviously going with smaller/faster OLB's i'm guessing to help attack all of these spread offenses? Again not sure if this is the future blueprint, but I remember Shafer saying he thinks the LBer position is the key to attacking these type of offenses. Plus based on the type of OLB's were recruiting it looks like that's what he's trying to do. a 3-4 based primarily on speed could be pretty interesting

The only time we moved the ball was when McDonald got his head out of his ass and started giving the ball to Smith to loosen things up. He did that the 1st drive of the 2nd half. After that it was inconsistent. First half was a joke. 99 bubble screens will boost the number of completions and receptions, but it's not an offense. I don't know how many 2nd and 3's we ran something stupid. Thank you Isiah Johnson and the unfortunate injury to their WR.

I hope the 3-4 isn't a permanent look though. Good idea today because WF plays on the perimeter and I don't think the staff trusts any of the DB's to play closer to the line like Shamarko did the past couple of years.

Would still like to see something else from the offense. I wouldn't mind lining up Estime in the backfield and sending him on some wheel routes. A team like BC is going to crowd the line and make Hunt beat them over the top.

were you sitting in front of me because me and the guy in front of me kept saying the whole game to just give Rome the ball. Not sure why we refused to? He barely touched it the first 3 possessions.

Maybe but doubtful. I'm in 302 and everyone, especially the first half was yelling for Jerome. Me, Jake, Cuseguy, SUBarney, GOSU, couldn't figure out what we were trying to do most of the time. Far too many east west plays both running and passing. But it was a HUGE win anyways.

I hated what I watched against GT...more of a read and react style 3-4 rather than the attack mentality we saw today. I think the defense had a very good, very experienced QB confused most of the game.

I really think dialing back the blitzes allowed our guys just to go out and use their speed. Obviously it was a night and day difference from GT

If I'm not mistaken, our best RB and pre-season candidate for All-ACC had exactly 1 more touch than a dead man in the first half.

We uesd the LB blitzes selectively and effectively. One reason we didn't do it more was because our front 3 was able to pressure Price. However, their rush was primarily up the middle (Bromley & Crume), so Wake started rolling-out Price, but he is innaccurate on the run.

Just as the 3-4 against GaTech was an attempt to adjust to the triple option, the 3-4 today was an attempt to adjust to Wake's spread -- often an empty backfield, and not much of a threat to run even when they had a RB in the formation.
If we go up against a team that favors the run, Shafer will likely go back to 4 down linemen.

As for the defensive success, have to give some credit to Wake's QB. He threw several passes into the ground short of receivers on wide throws & missed receivers badly over the middle. I am sure the defensive pressured contributed to this, but that was one of the worst QB performances I can recall. We don't like our play-calling, I can imagine what the Wake board is saying at this point.

Several? Several every possession!

During the game I was thinking that I bet Montana from Tulane would have had a good game at QB for Wake.

Just listened to the Shafer post-game presser and he said they used 3-4 Oakie and the "Georgia 4-4" with which I am unfamiliar.

It looks like HCSS circled this game on the schedule and they may have been prepping the 3-4 against Tech to prepare for this game. Wake screams for this type of D whereas the option does not. pulling an old FHCDM move perhaps...

WF was stacking the box.

Just from the highlights I can tell you on the sack by brom and spruill , wilkes was blitzing off the edge. The lineman slid to cover the c gap which opened the b gap for spruill. Bromley simply destroyed the center even with the gaurd crashing in to help more than once.

Believe hcss said Georgia 4 vs 4-4. Perhaps thats the look we've been giving when we put one of our mlb's on the line between the dt and de out of the base 3-4 personnel? I've seen Spruill lining up on the line inside at least as far back as the nc state game.

I actually thought Price threw a lot of nice passes, in the first half especially. He was forced to go on the run on I think every single passing play. Kept his eyes downfield the whole time. He was the victim of a few key drops. That one by the fullback down near the 5 yard line was awful, but I guess that's why fullbacks shouldn't be that far downfield.

By the 4th quarter, I think Wake had folded their tent. Their OL knew there was nothing more they could do, and I think Price just completely tired out from how we chased him all day.

My favorite part of the D was one of Wake's last series. Instead of going prevent with a 13 point lead, we just kept attacking as we had all day, blitzes still coming from the outside. I was worried we'd start backing off.

That would explain the mystery.
