After the PS Article on Loeb today

I'll feel great about it if he gets at least SOME meaningful game experience this year and does something with it.

the quote from Marone said he was the most dangerous runner. Not potentially, not the fastest. Never said he couldn't be. 40 speed doesn't mean your the most dangerous runner. But I will at least like to see evidence before I start bragging about someone. What have you seen in Loeb's last 4 years at SU that shows he's a dangerous runner. If so than he should have been in packages during the games. Dangerous to me means, Make people miss, break 50 plus runs, run over people at times. Stiff arms, Jukes. I just havent seen that from him at all. Not even in his high school days. Ashton, Kinder, and Hunt rushed for over 7000 yards combined in HS.

Why do you think Marrone made the comment? It's not a posters opinion or what they have seen in 4 years. They are Marrone words.

Bees Loeb reminds me a little of Philcox waited his turn got better each year and ended up with a very nice run in the nfl. Loeb throws the best ball of anyone on the team throws a very good deep ball and has NFL size. The only thing i dont like about him in the limited time i have seen him throw in practice is that he has a slow delivery which could improve. He is smart knows the O and is accurate. My money is on him to start next year
I think Loeb starts next year and he's a bridge to Allen. Given the quote about his running ability, maybe he's more like Kevin Mason.

I am just as excited as anyone about Allen, but lets be realistic. He will be a true frosh next yr, lets hope he isnt the starter. He needs a yr to understand the system and learn the playbook.

Marrone and Hack will play the best QB. If its Loeb, great. He just competed with the country's best QB's and did pretty damn well.

Either way, I think that if Loeb starts, there will be situational plays where maybe a different QB comes in for a snap. Gotta love the options...

Because it is emphatically not true. The comment that he is more dangerous than Broyld is an absolute joke. If so, he would have been used in the same manner as Broyld is anticipated this year. Or as Nassib was used when GP was the starter!

My view: If Loeb isn't going to single handedly carry us to bowl eligibility next year, then it seems way more worthwhile to break in the future starter than waste a year with Loeb.

How do you know its not true.

PS: keep in mind Broyld is considered a RB.

Is there a specific reason you think Loeb can't be as good of a runner as Broyld, Hunt or Kinder? Because that sounds a little bit...I don't know...how do you say...

I also worry that Marrone still has an NFL mentality and believes so much in his system that he isn't willing to dumb it down for college kids. NFL/WC Os are complex. With a ever changing roster of young kids and limited practice, IMO it is better to try and keep things simple. Marrone has already shown several times that he will favor playing a kid that gives 110% in practice, knows the entire playbook front to back, and has mediocre at best talent over a talented kid who gives 90% in practice and only knows 80% of the playbook. That IMO is a mistake. You need playmakers out there in college FB and should tweak things to get those players the ball (let alone on the field) as much as possible.

I'm not sure about that. In fact, I think it's just the opposite. A pro coach will be much MORE likely to play a guy who isn't necessarily putting out 100% in practice, if he can turn it on in a game. College coaches need guys who will work hard day in and day out. Ultimately, those are the guys you can count on to be in shape in the 4th quarter; to make the key block; to stay in their lane; to lead by example.

Everyone needs playmakers. The challenge is getting your playmakers (if you have any) to work hard.

Does MARRONE'S words show in his decision making and game planning? Why will our most dangerous running QB be a place holder the last two years. Marrone's job is on the line. I would think he would play him if thats the case. Why not use his dangerous running style that he displayed in practice and spring games.

I understand he's listed as a RB. But I have to believe that if Loeb were that "dangerous", we would have pulled some fake FGs and had success doing so the last few years. The only thin dangerous about the guy is him actually getting PT. the number of turnovers would be unbearable and likely mark the end of Marrone's stead as our HC.

So Marrone is lying?

My guess is right now Loeb's confidence is as high as it's ever been. Over the years he's put in the work at multiple QB camps. And this year he doesn't just have a flock of young ladies swooning over him back in the bayou. He's had some other successes. In that context it makes sense for HCDM to be saying Loeb is the #2 and looks good. The competition will continue and who knows what happens by the opener, but I'm excited to hear that Loeb is ready to play if his number is called.

Are people going to be pissed here if he is the starter next year while we bridge the gap to Allen/Wilson/Hunt/Broyld?

The fact he's still the #2 guy on this team really shows that this is a possibility and unless one of the young guys makes major strides this year it may be the case.

Just wondering how many people would be writing posts each week bitching that bench options are better...

Weren't you all in on the T Hunt bandwagon? Now you are posting about people possibly griping about Loeb?

I don't really get the point of this post. You could have re-phrased in a much better way.

This just sounds like you are being a crank.

yup...todd philcox went from a one year starter right to the NFL.

let's worry about this season first as i just broke in a new arm chair

So we're arguing about whether there will be arguing about who might start, next year.

Awesome.

Yes

This has been a really dumb thread.

On the one hand that's good - at least a portion of the fanbase is really hungry for anything related to SU football.

But I can't take this Loeb discussion seriously. I can absolutely believe that a somewhat unheralded player could come in, have a position handed to them out of necessity, and over time improve to the point where their spot on the depth chart comes from merit and not circumstance, and it isn't at all surprising if this is what's happening with Loeb.

What I'm having a tough time with is the reaction to just a little bit of commentary from Marrone. Boil it down, and basically Marrone's statement is that Loeb has improved. That's it. Shouldn't shock anyone, if a player has some raw ability and the coaches can coach at all guys should be getting better. This Loeb thing is pretty much coach speak, and it's being treated as some type of revelation.

In reality what it is is that even before Marrone said anything, people couldn't believe that Loeb had improved a lot and was clearly the #2 right now and there is the possibility he could start next year.

As to coach speak, yep that stuff happens all the time and Marrone does it himself. It's in their DNA. But what he said was not that Loeb had improved, but that he was the most dangerous runner of the QB's. I think that through some folks for a loop.

exactly. I dont care if he's the starter or not next year. Im rooting for him. But its no way he's the most dangerous runner out of the QB's.

C'mom, how can you guys doubt?

We all know that Loeb is better looking than Tom Brady...another unheralded QB, at least in the NFL draft.

How can he miss?

The job will be open and rthe best guy will win it. It doesn't matter who we imagined that would be.

Next year's starter is an issue for next year. A lot can and will happen between now and then, and players develop at different rates, so I don't see any sense arguing about a hypothetical situation. The real issue is determining who is this year's back-up. The QBs running ability is a big consideration with the "new" offense.

I think HCDM's comments were intended to publicly commend Loeb for his hard work and development in the off-season.
