I’ll continue to keep track of how teams did against ranked teams. Just something to look at in evaluating teams. The formula is to give teams points based on the ranking of the team they played: 25 points for playing a #1 ranked team, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, down to 1 point for playing #25. (A shortcut: subtract the number of the ranking from 26). Then you add in the net point differential of the game.

Example: Navy lost to #13 Notre Dame 3-42. The Middies get 13 points for playing the #13 team but lose 39 for losing to that team 3-42. Net points: -26. Let’s see who had the best result each week and who accumulates the most points over the season.

WEEK 8
Florida State beat #16 Duke 38-20 = +28
Ohio State beat #7 Penn State 20-12 = +27
Alabama beat #17 Tennessee 34-20 = +23
Virginia beat #10 North Carolina 31-27 = +20
Central Florida lost to #6 Oklahoma 29-31 = +18
Penn State lost to #3 Ohio State 12-20 = +15
Arizona State lost to #5 Washington 7-15 = +13
Southern California lost to #14 Utah 32-34 = +10
Utah beat #18 Southern California 34-32 = +10
Auburn lost to #13 Mississippi 21-28 = +6
Duke lost to #4 Florida State 20-38 = +4
Tennessee lost to #11 Alabama 20-34 = +1
Minnesota beat #24 Iowa 12-10 = Even
North Texas State lost to #23 Tulane 28-35 = -4
Navy lost to #22 Air Force 6-17 = -7
South Carolina lost to #20 Missouri 12-34 = -16
Michigan State lost to #2 Michigan 0-49 = -25
Stanford lost to #25 UCLA 7-42 = -34
Army lost to #19 Louisiana State 0-62 = -55

No earth-shattering results here, (the top ten performances, below, remained unchanged), but lots of positive point totals due to close games and ranked teams playing each other. Despite the closeness of most of the games, the quality of football wasn’t that high, IMO. Florida State gained the most points after being behind most of the game. North Carolina lost to a Virginia team that had won one game in the last year and that was to an FCS team. The teams we’ve beaten – and the teams we’ve lost to - are not looking good right now and the teams we have yet to play are looking better than we thought. Army lost the “Dietzel Bowl”: the first game between the two schools since LSU’s first national championship coach, (Paul Dietzel), jumped to Army, feeling it was the better job, in 1962.
