This year I will be again charting how teams have done “against ranked teams”, which is something that always comes up at the end of the year when the arguments over who should be in the NCAA tournament start. As usual, this is not meant to end those arguments, just to give those making them something to look at in forming their opinions. This is just one thing to look at. But I think it’s a big thing. I’m going to do it a bit differently this year. The old procedure was that I would first grant teams playing ranked teams a certain number of points based on who they are playing. If you played the #1 team, (I use the AP- writer’s poll for continuity), you get 25 points. If you are playing the #2 team, you get 24 points, etc. down to getting 1 point for playing the #25 team. I call these “schedule points”. Here’s a chart to make it simple: 1-25, 2-24, 3-23, 4-22, 5-21, 6-20, 7-19, 8-18, 9-17, 10-16, 11-15, 12-14, 13-13, 14-12, 15-11, 16-10, 17-9, 18-8, 19-7, 20-6, 21-5, 22-4, 23-3, 24-2, 25-1. (Of course you can always just subtract the ranking from 26. That will work every time.) Then I look at the point differential in the actual game. If you defeated the ranked team, you add the number of points you won by to the schedule points. If you lost to that team, you subtract the margin you lost by from the schedule points. (I call these ‘game’ points.) The difference between this year and last year if that I didn’t count any deficit: if you got to zero, you got zero. This year I’m going to try to record negative points, too, so a team can get full ‘credit’ for a really bad performance. WEEK 14 Duke beat #3 Virginia 81=71 = +33 points Clemson beat #11 Virginia Tech 59-51 = +23 points Louisville beat #11 Virginia Tech 72-64 = +23 points Illinois beat #9 Michigan State 79-74 = +22 points Kansas State beat #13 Kansas 74-67 = +20 points Texas Christian beat #17 Iowa State 92-83 = +18 points Mississippi State lost to #5 Kentucky 67-71 = +17 points St. John’s beat #10 Marquette 70-69 = +17 points Michigan beat #19 Wisconsin 61-52 = +16 points Florida State beat #16 Louisville 80-75 = +15 points University of Miami lost to #8 North Carolina 85-88 = +15 points Villanova lost to #10 Marquette 65-66 = +15 points Virginia lost to #2 Duke 71-81 = +14 points Florida lost to #1 Tennessee 61-73 = +13 points Marquette beat #14 Villanova 66-65 = +13 points Missouri lost to #1 Tennessee 60-72 = +13 points Wisconsin lost to #7 Michigan 52-61 = +10 points Oklahoma lost to #17 Iowa State 74-75 = +8 points Cincinnati lost to #12 Houston 58-65 = +7 points Houston beat #25 Cincinnati 65-58 = +6 points Central Florida lost to #12 Houston 68-77 = +5 points Creighton lost to #14 Villanova 59-66 = +5 points Northwestern lost to #20 Iowa 79-80 = +5 points Colorado State lost to #6 Nevada-Reno 82-98 = +4 points Minnesota lost to #19 Wisconsin 51-56 = +2 points Virginia Tech lost to #16 Louisville 64-72 = +2 points Indiana lost to #20 Iowa 72-77 = +1 point Mississippi State lost to #21 Louisiana State 88-92 = +1 point North Carolina State lost to #8 North Carolina 96-113 = +1 point Oklahoma State lost to #13 Kansas 72-84 = +1 point Auburn lost to #21 Louisiana State 78-83 = 0 points Louisville lost to #22 Florida State 75-80 = -1 point Boston College lost to #2 Duke 55-80 = -2 points Memphis lost to #25 Cincinnati 64-69 = -4 points Oklahoma lost to #18 Texas Tech 54-66 = -4 points Minnesota lost to #9 Michigan State 55-79 = -7 points Rutgers lost to #7 Michigan 65-77 = -7 points South Carolina lost to #5 Kentucky 48-76 = -7 points Nebraska lost to #15 Purdue 62-81 = -8 points San Francisco lost to #4 Gonzaga 62-92 = -8 points New Mexico lost to #6 Nevada-Reno 62-91 = -9 points Central Michigan lost to #23 Buffalo 76-90 = -11 points Nebraska lost to #24 Maryland 45-60 = -13 points Syracuse lost to #22 Florida State 62-80 = -14 points West Virginia lost to #18 Texas Tech 50-81 = -23 points St. Mary’s lost to #4 Gonzaga 46-94 = -26 points Comments: The absence of Justin Robinson has turned Virginia Tech into a team ripe for the picking for points in this system. The ACC is the place to pick up points. The top three games and 6 of the top 13 on this list involved ACC games. Syracuse will have plenty of opportunities to pick up points the rest of the way, assuming we are at least competitive. THE TOP 25 Duke +200 points Michigan State +149 points North Carolina +138 points Michigan +135 points Kansas +126 points Virginia +125 points Louisville +104 points Marquette +101 points Wisconsin +93 points Iowa State +87 points Iowa +85 points Purdue +84 points Kansas State +80 points Texas +79 points Kentucky +77 points Florida State +65 points Indiana +63 points Alabama +62 points Arizona State +59 points Auburn +54 points Baylor +52 points Louisiana State +47 points New Mexico +47 points Tennessee +46 points Gonzaga +44 points U of Miami +44 points Syracuse has +27 points The worst total so far is Tennessee Tech with -104 points
