I was leafing through my ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia, (which came out after the 2008-09 season), and noticed that they picked an all-time team for each school. Here’s ours:
Syracuse: Derrick Coleman, John Wallace, Billy Owens, Dave Bing, Sherman Douglas.
They are listing Coleman as a center, which he basically was during the 1988-89 season, (our consensus choice for our most talented team as it had 3 of these five players on it). You could argue for Carmelo but it would be close between him and J-Dub or Billy and he was here just the one year, (but what a year).
I decided to look up the all-time teams of some other schools and see which ones seemed the most impressive, (again, consider this is through the 2008-09 season):
Cincinnati: Danny Fortson, Kenyon Martin, Jack Twyman, Steve Logan, Oscar Robertson
Connecticut: Emeka Okafor, Walt Dropo, Richard Hamilton, Ray Allen, Chris Smith
WALT DROPO? UConn Huskies Stats - Walt Dropo
Well, he had a heck of a rookie year for the Red Sox.
DePaul: George Mikan, Dave Corzine, Mark Aguirre, Tom Kleinschmidt, David Booth
Duke: Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Art Heyman, Johnny Dawkins, Bobby Hurley
Georgetown: Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Reggie Williams, Allen Iverson, Eric Floyd
Holy Cross: George Kaftan, Togo Palazzi, Tom Heinsohn, Ronnie Perry, Bob Cousy
Houston: Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes, Clyde Drexler, Oris Birdsong, Don Cheney
Indiana: Walt Bellamy, George McGinnis, Scott May, Steve Alford, Isiah Thomas
Kansas: Wilt Chamberlain, Clyde Lovelette, Danny Manning, Paul Pierce, Jo Jo White
Kentucky: Dan Issel, Cliff Hagan, Jack Givens, Frank Ramsey, Ralph Beard
(I think that line-up would change if it were updated to the present)
LaSalle: Tom Gola, Lionel Simmons, Michael Brooks, Ken Durrett, Larry Cannon (Where’s Jellybean?)
LSU: Shaquille O’Nealle Bob Pettit, Rudy Macklin, Pete Maravich, Chris Jackson
Louisville: Wes Unseld, Charlie Tyra, Pervis Ellison, Darrell Griffith. LaBradford Smith
Marquette: Jim Chones, Bo Ellis, Dwayne Wade, George Thompson, Butch lee
Michigan: Rudy Tomjanovich, Chris Webber, Glen Rice, Cazzie Russell, Gary grant
Michigan State: Johnny Green, Greg Kelser, Steve Smith, Scott Skiles, Magic Johnson
Nevada-Las Vegas: Sidney Green, Larry Jonson, Eddie Owens, Stacey Augmon, Greg Anthony
North Carolina: Tyler Hansbrough, Lennie Rosenbluth, Antawn Jamison, Michael Jordan, Phil Ford
NC State: Tom Burleson, Ronnie Shavlik, David Thompson, Julius Hodge, Rodney Monroe
Notre Dame: John Shumate, Troy Muphy, Adrian Dantley, Kevin O’Shea, Austin Carr
Ohio State: Jerry Lucas, Dennis Hopson, John Havlicek, Jim Jackson, Robin Freeman
Oklahoma: Stacey King, Wayman Tisdale, Blake Griffin, Tim McCalister, Mookie Blaylock
Oklahoma State: Bob Kurland, Bryant Reeves, Byron Houston, Desmond Mason, Tony Allen
Providence: Marvin Barnes, Ryan Gomes, Austin Croshere, Jimmy Walker, Ernie DiGregorio
Purdue: Joe Barry Carroll, Glenn Robinson, terry Dischinger, Dave Schellhase, Rick Mount
St. Bonaventure: Bob Lanier, Tom Stith, Essie Hollis, Whitey Martin, Fred Crawford (No Jimmy Satalin?)
St. John’s: Walter Berry, Tony Jackson, Chris Mullin, Dick McGuire, Mark Jackson
San Francisco: Bill Russell, Bill Cartwright, Mike Farmer. Quintin Dailey, KC Jones
Seton Hall: Walter Dukes, Mark Bryant, Nick Werkman, Richie Regan, Terry Dehere
Tennessee: Dale Ellis, Bernard King, Ernie Grunfeld, Alan Houston, Chris Lofton
UCLA: Lew Alcindor, Bill Walton, Sidney Wicks, Gail Goodrich, Walt Hazzard.
Utah Billy McGill, Andrew Bogut, Keith Van Horn, Arnie Ferrin, Andre Miller
Villanova: Ed Pinckney, Howard Porter, Paul Arizin, Kerry Kittles, Randy Foye
Wake Forest: Dickie Hemric, Tim Duncan, Len Chappell, Randolph Childress, Chris Paul
West Virginia: Mark Workman, Rod Thorn, Rod Hundley, Wil Robinson, Jerry West
Wichita State: Cliff Levingston, Dave Stallworth, Xavier McDaniel, Cleo Littlejohn, Warren Armstrong
I think our team would beat a lot of those. I guess I’d have to favor that UCLA to win a tournament of them but Houston also looks pretty strong and LSU might actually be the best. Certainly, they’d be the most fun.
