Analysis: Is Drew Allen staring down receivers?

That's a pretty good break down. I'd like to see more stuff from Chris Carlson.

One problem I wonder about is the spacing and blown routes by the receivers?

It was a good article. Seems like when the ball is supposed to go to Jerrod West, bad things happen. He is struggling to get open and our QB struggles when he has to deal with covered receivers.

My biggest criticism of Allen is his lack of discipline when he gets in a situation where all his receivers are covered (this will be happen increasingly with our group of finesse WRs and the fine CBs of the ACC). When this happens, you either get some yards running or just throw the ball away.

After two games, I can remember him running in this situation one time. I still haven't seen him throw a ball away. His throws into double coverage routinely. It is amazing how many times he has done this.

One problem with Allen just throwing the ball away Tom is if he's still in the pocket and there's some pressure. I don't understand why he doesn't roll out and clear his reading zone.

I also think that Allen is going to be the closest thing we've had to Troy Nunes since well...Troy Nunes. Not his feet obviously but his decisions and extreme up and down moments.

Hunt would be able to provide that needed element in this offense. Allen has no instinct to roll out, he either gets sacked or forces it.

Solution: stop drawing up plays for #88 as your 1st progression. Broyld, Estime, Clark and Kobena deserve it more than him and they can make things happen after they catch the ball.

Two things:

1) Define "deserve".
2) Two of the four you've mentioned have very questionable hands.

So what we may have here is that when things break down Allen throws the ball even if it's in a crowd and Hunt takes off running.

How do you know Hunt would roll out? from what one series in the NW game. Have a little faith in the coaching staff to make the right decision on QB. If Hunt gave them the best chance to win they would go with him.

1.) Deserves meaning has already shown their ability in a game so far.
2.) Hands don't matter if you can't get open, so I will take receivers who can get open and have "questionable" hands over a receiver who can't break free. Broyld has dropped 2, maybe 3 balls of the 18 or so thrown his way.

k cuse

How do I know Hunt would roll out? I don't, it's just my assumption. We saw last week that he likes to move around.

Did I say I've lost faith in the coaching staff? Way to exaggerate. I am all-in on the Shafer train. Still doesn't mean I can't say I like Hunt. I liked Hunt all spring and summer, too. I've been very consistent on that stance.

1.) Deserves meaning has already shown their ability in a game so far. I think making 43 catches last year more than proves that West can play.

Broyld has dropped 2, maybe 3 balls of the 18 or so thrown his way. So, 3 drops out how many catchable balls? He seems to have difficulty with passes that are thrown down the field i.e. anything not a swing pass. Believe me...I want him to succeed but I also think the staff is misusing West. He is not your "stretch-the-field" option.

Not disagreeing with you RMH44 , but remember West was often open last year as defenders were doubling down on Sales and Lemon. Now that he is the "#1", he hasn't been able to break free.

Him running a vertical is absolutely pointless, I agree. I feel like other guys have stepped up now though and should continue to get more looks. There are still plenty of balls to go around to keep West more than involved. Broyld is not a vert guy either, but has turned into a really good slot receiver.

But who designated him number 1? And if he is getting doubled, we need to scheme/find other options.

I honestly believe that our wr's will get much better looks once we establish the run. Keep those LB's and safeties a couple of steps closer to the line of scrimmage.

Kobena and Clark seem to be the best vertical wr's and I'd love to see Estime and Broyld enter that picture.

That and a simple look one way for just a second and then on the receiver from Allen.

That's the problem, he's not even getting doubled.

We should start Loeb. He could just hand the ball off and then freeze the entire defense with a dreamy gaze down field.

I seem to remember West having very questionable hands last year, certainly the worst of our primary pass catchers. Didn't he drop 2-3 critical touchdown passes as well? I think one of them wouldve even given us another win. I have a poor memory for bad plays though, try to focus on the ones I like :)

It is simple. West is not good enough to beat most teams top CB's. There is a reason he was a third reciever last year just because the number one and number two recievers graduate does not mean that West all of a sudden became number one material. He does not deserve to remain our top target. At this point i would be looking at Clark as our number one with Bris Ash Funder and Kobena in the mix. These guys are our future at WR play them

If Drew Allen was being rode by a bear wearing a monocle carrying the American flag, this would be him staring at a receiver.
