Angeli now leads the nation in passing

Ha awesome. Looking at a winless ND team to start the season with their qbs not so stellar stats, I wonder how long it will be until we start reading about Notre Dame fans lamenting the loss of Angeli. Lol
My guess is November 22. Angeli goes off on Notre Dame, the fans realize what they gave up, nobody cares outside of Syracuse and South Bend, but all take silent notice of what HCFB is doing on the Hill.

i didn't watch the whole game but Gator's QB throwing 5 picks ??????
i mean i see him talking to the coach on the sideline ...any advice to be given ???

From the ND fans I know (good people), they liked Angeli, they root for him with us. They're fine with the decision. They're really really really not happy with Chris Ash as DC. But then, who has ever been?

A lot of empty yds. Top 10 in yds, bottom 90 in efficiency. Obviously puffed up after yesterday, but if that is going to mean anything pts need to correlate.

56 points and 27 first downs per game through 3 games.
You can call that empty yards, but we came back to make it a game vs. Tenn, and came from behind in a big way against UConn. Yes, it was UConn, but it's not like we played 3 punching bags, we played one.

All-time great thread topic, that Chris Ash.

We may be a small(ish) private school with people of many backgrounds but I like to think we came together as a people and broke the internet that day.

Sounds like ND fans are in that mode now.

If we can keep this production in the passing game, even with a dubious line, i don't see why we couldn't continue to attract top Receiver and Quarterback talent.
Exactly what I was thinking. "Come to Syracuse and you could be the record holder for most passing yards... Career, single season, single game records are always in reach."

I spent some additional time thinking about this and thought it worth replying to my own post instead of editing.

The single game passing record was set in 2016 by none other than Patrick Mahomes, who has proven to be a decent QB. He did it in a losing effort against Oklahoma. That game Mahomes passed for 734 yards on 88 attempts with 52 completions. He also threw 5 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield was 27/36 for 545 yards and 7 TDs... Also a decent passing game.

Oklahoma also ran over Texas Tech for 309 yards and 2 touchdowns. I imagine some people we depressed they took the under on points by about halftime after 7 TDs had already been scored. The teams combined for 10 Touchdowns and one punt after halftime. Neither defense had a stop after the first drive of the second half.

So, what I found interesting about this game is just how many passes Mahomes had to throw to set that record. His completion percentage was 59% and his average yards per attempt was a decent but not great 8.3... To put that into perspective, McCord averaged 8.1 yards per attempt all last season.

This wasn't an all world game, in terms of passing efficiency, for Mahomes. What he did have is volume. Texas Tech couldn't run the ball at all. Mahomes was their leading rusher with 85 scrambling yards and the rest of the team only rushed for 35.

So, what does this mean for Angeli? He might be called upon to be Mahomes-lite at some point this season. Especially with Willis injured for who knows how long, a porous defense and a decent but not great offensive line, there are sure to be some games this season where we give up a lot of points, can't run the ball, and need him to throw every down.

Angeli has weapons around him. A really solid receiver corp (JRS, Cook and Gill), a starting running back whose best talents are pass blocking and catching (Nixon), and a tight end who has shown he can catch and get yards after the catch (Villari). The pass blocking of the line isn't great, but I suspect it will get better.

If we let Angeli air it out because we have no other options, and we are otherwise going to lose a shootout... Why couldn't he throw it 80 times, complete 60% of his passes and go for 734?

Against Tennessee, under pressure, and in his first game in a de facto road game, Angeli was sacked 5 times, hit a bunch in addition to that, and still completed 57.5% for a 6.9 average. It was a rough game in a few ways... Against UConn, a much worse defense, but closer to what we will see going forward, Angeli was 62.5% and a 7.7 average yards per pass. Still not up to Mahomes or McCord standard. But he seemed to turn the corner in the 4th quarter, where he threw about half his yards and at a much higher percentage. We won't even look at Colgate, but he looked pretty good against them as well.

So, my summary is that Angeli is perfectly set up to have HUGE passing numbers this season. Great receivers, no running game and a likelihood of other teams scoring well against our defense all add up to him having a lot of passing attempts. Possibly, if he has a really good game, he could compete for insane records like Mahomes passing record or even Klingler's 11 TD game when they ran up the score in 1990. Or 89 passing attempts set by Connor Halliday of Washington State in 2013.

The offense is a tremendous recruiting edge for wide receivers and QBs. Literally anything is possible when it's so pass heavy off an offense.

I don't think i'm stating anything obvious but Angeli is definitely someone you can win big with. He's not going to put a team on his shoulders like a Sellers, but if we can get him some lineman next year we'll have the pieces to be a very good to great offense.
Can we get him an OL coach that can teach these kids how to pick up delayed blitzes and stunts?
