Antonio Barton

It doesn't sound good... but until I hear him say SU is out or he commits elsewhere I'm not accepting at face value he's out of the picture. A week ago it was done to UM... until we found out he visited Tenn in secret. Who knows... another secret visit north?

That's why I am saying we new a pure point guard. I assume Patterson or silent G won't be asked to play the point at any other time in their career so if anything it could help their development by letting them focus on their natural position .

Not always though.Cooneys game for example is set for shooting spot up threes off receving a pass, and driving once in a while. He will come down the court and pass the ball before ever shooting a three. That should be a true pg's role. It also would add to a more unselfish look to the team, and most importantly he has dajuans post up game, and gbinine and cj's drive and kickout to get him open looks. Its better to have a 4th scoring option on the court then a backup drive and dish guard with only two real solid scoring options and one decent one.

I am really really high on Cooney trying out the point next year, as I think it would really fit with the players he has around him. Now if dajuans offense doesn't evolve and Gbinije is only good for 8ppg then no, but I don't see that happening.

Yes, premature substantial criticism is great. Maybe you should travel over to the Lax board and ask the brainiacs who started the "fire Desko" campaign about how that is working out for them.

Who exactly is this person who preferred a frosh Ennis over MCW? Are you trying to suggest JB prefers this? Please, MCW declared early.

You need to get a hold of a roster sheet. If Ennis gets hurt there are a couple of people you forgot to mention - MG and Buss.

While I admire a keen eye for the obvious, and should know better than to be facetious here, that's the point.
Without Tyler Ennis we'd likely be left with MGb running the show.

Talented though he may be, a 6-7 swingman is unlikely to be magic.
(Let me make sure I'm obvious...use of the word "magic" is meant to be a sly reference to "Magic"...as in Magic Johnson).
In other words, at best we'd have a difficult situation.
At worst, we'd have real problems.

A speculative situation?
Of course.
But one any coach has to consider and for which he must prepare.

The positive way of looking at this news:

Hard to imagine Barton picking Maryland or Tennessee over SU if he thought he was going to start or play starters minutes here. He must think we are pretty darn good at guard. Hopefully he's right.

Can we bring back last years thread on guards? It would save a lot of key strokes. Just substitute Ennis for MCW.
How did that work out??

Well it ended with our only two capable guards fouled out and our third, and only other, guard making a terrible play, because we had no one else.

Winner winner

Of Couse nobody is doubting we would be more then capable as is. My thing is we can't keep rolling the dice. If ennis blows out a knee first week of practice then what. We have to have a back up plan

Kid would have filled three of our biggest weaknesses just by himself--consistent three point shooting, backup point guard, and lack of backcourt experience.

Oh well.

Completely agree. he was EXACTLY what we needed. Would have, in my opinion, locked us in as a top 5 team next year. Its ok to admit when we lose out on someone people, dont always have to act like we dont need a player if they go somewhere else.

i think barton would have started on this team, and it wouldnt have been close.

I don't think he would have started... but he'd be a big piece on the team. Probably the first or second guy off the bench.

You think Barton would have started over Ennis?

There's no way. Not only that, but Ennis does not get the after 2 minute yank. I believe. You believe. We will all believe a few games in.

Barton starts at the 2. Plays backup point. I think he wouldve had the most minutes of any of our guards.

And don't we all believe JB has told him as much. Otherwise, if Barton thought he was starting there is no real decision to be made. There is no comparison between basketball programs.

There is only a decision to be made when he has to weigh in playing time at the respective schools. I don't think he would be penciled in as a starter here, but could be the 3rd guard. I hope it's MG that is scaring him off because my confidence has been shaken in Cooney.

I can see why peoples confidence is shaken in Cooney, but Cooney is a true shooter compared to someone like Triche, or MCW(who we thought could be).

Think back to guys like Gerry and Devendorf, Wes Johnson, and Sr. Rautins thats the kind of guy we expect out of him near 40% from three and the ability to hit the big shot, not the 26% outside shooter he is now. Maybe its time to bring the big ball out for Cooney to help his acuracy?

Stirred, not shaken

Ahh well... I guess that's the official death of Barton to cuse... Gary Parrish just tweeted he got a text from Barton saying he's picking between K State, Maryland, Tenn, and Tex A&M. All the speculation turned out to be right this time... came down to playing time, not winning.
