Any defensive help on the horizon?

With AJ Long looking like the guy, we have a true freshman with swag and talent at QB and a bunch of young weapons coming up through the ranks. I like the future of our offense and its ability to compete against FSU type talent.

That being said, our defense can look so good against our peer talent level but against anyone with 4/5 star talent, their only hope for a stop in a turnover. Is there any help on the horizon? Bigger, faster linebackers? DBs with cover skills and most importantly PASS RUSHERS?

I'm not well informed on football recruiting, can anyone with info help shed some light on the future of our defense?

Not really. Desperately need some DT's and have a couple interesting DB prospects (doesn't everyone.

People point to 2015 as the year (looking to Ishmael etc), but the defense loses a lot to graduation. The recruits on the d side won't help right away.

We're bringing in some big safeties which is refreshing. Kids who look like FSU sized safeties. All over 6-0 200, at least on paper.

Another couple of linebackers.

Need a couple more corners, DEnd and tackles. If raymon returns at full strength that changes things a little inside. Wayne and Sloan got a lot of run today, plus we'll have Coleman and the two 300lbers.

The best 2 DT's are Raymon, and Williams, get Thompson, and Johnson back outside with Simmons, our D-Line will be much better next year.

We lose a lot to graduation, but really, is it going to massively hurt us? I like Cam Lynch and Dy Davis, but they can't cover to save their lives. If you take them out of the blitz game, they are rendered virtually irrelevant. Reddish might be a bigger loss since our secondary is so awful.

In terms of linebackers, Franklin, Thomas, Bennett, and Moskal could all step in and possibly be just as effective next year as the guys we're losing.

I think the difference between peers and the FSUs of the world is that FSU can take the blitz and deliver a strike more often than not. Even so, they made mistakes and coughed it up. This d is averaging more than 2 forced fumbles a game. Difficult to be too hard on the DBs given how much pressure is on them if the blitzers don't get there or don't get there in time. Just the nature of the scheme. Huge risk but also big rewards. If the offense could take advantage of those turnovers caused on a more regular basis, no one would be complaining about the d. Bullough is fine. He's a Shafer clone. Hopefully, we got the offensive side of our coaching staff squared away today too.

Agree we are what we are blitz 60% plus of the time but our secondary really is weak. They just tore Whigham up today. We need to get bigger and faster to play in this conference.

Kind of agree. I watch these SEC teams with crazy defensive talent constantly give up big plays and 30 points against the top teams. Difference being, their offense also scores. We will allow points but we need a few more stops not caused by turnovers and get better at holding to FGs.

A bunch of those plays were zone coverage where the safety help never came. 3rd FSU TD was the best example. We run a zone blitz, Eskridge reads Winston's eyes wrong and leaves Whigham to pick up a guy with 6 inches on him. Winston also happens to deliver a great pass b/c the blitzers never made it to him. But most of the damage was done on on underneath routes today. With FSU's athletes, it's hard to fault the DBs.

Whig is supposed to be reading the hands and shoulders not the eyes because they move slower and are better clues. That's what Shafer teaches.
We keep saying that every game - boy, those receivers are good. Zone doesn't mean nobody cover anybody. When you blitz as often as we do we have to have better athletes in the secondary. We have LB's that can't cover and slow dbs. We will never get to where we need to go without bigger and stronger secondary. Am I wrong?

No, he definitely got beat but he wouldn't have stopped that play even if he didn't. The blitz didn't disrupt Winston. When it doesn't, bad things will happen more often than not. Better athletes would have an effect but not as big a one as you might imagine, especially if the blitz doesn't work. Smarter players would help just as much, IMO. Shamarko got big hits because more often than not he was in the right place to get those hits.

I will certainly agreed with smarter!

Sloan was solid today. Hopefully this gets sugar bear outside more where he can be a difference maker. Also I love the kids effort but we need Davis or someone else in for Kirkland. No angles when attacking.

Millen on a couple occasions highlighted bad technique with SU tackling. Granted FSU is bigger and faster and all that but a better SU defense is directly related to better coaching. Discipline and technique come from coaching.

Kirkland I think started the second. I'm not sure I recall much of Davis in the second half. I almost think Davis might have been benched. I'll have to watch it again. Kirkland was bad though, he's as
Much of a disappointment as Davis.

Agree the defense is in much need of some help. What happened to Isiah (sp?) Johnson, he showed some bright flashes last year but doesnt seem to be getting much PT this year...
