Any Spring Practice Updates?

We're keeping these guys under wraps:

So the big secret is Buzz Williams is our kicking tee?

The Wash. Generals always look good when they play each other.

LOL...that is the truth. It never fails that after each spring/fall scrimmage, we drink the kool-ade in believing this team is a world beater. Then we play another school and reality sets in.

Sounds like the Frosh look terrific.

Nothing? Nadda? Zilch? Even though practices are closed, someone has to have heard something, right?

Just hoping for no injuries... (knock on wood).

Have to give the program some credit - Marrone set out to keep things quiet and he has done just that.

I have heard absolutely nothing.

I want to be there, but I'm fine with it.

I'll have a chance to see what I want to see during the spring game.

We're installing the Triple Wishbone Option Spread Turkey Leg. On defense we're going to confuse opponents by playing only two players, one of which will be Wayne Mahar.

I know but what I've been told has made me much more enthusiastic than before spring started. I had tempered my expectations greatly before the spring.

This can only mean one thing...the forward pass.

Here's the thing- the resourceful or the well connected do know things. However, there's a fear of posting information because its well-known that the coaching staff reads the board.

The Coach doesn't want things getting out. That's the conspiracy theory as to why practices are closed off.

The Marrone Plan: Chapter 319 - To generate excitement within the fanbase, go full George Orwell on them by Year 4.

What.

I don't think I've seen the collective fanbase as defeated as it is right now. Well done, Marrone. Keep up the great work.

It's not about fearing the iron fist. It's about respecting channels of information.

That's too bad. The great information provided by posters here is what made this forum great over the past 13 years.

I agree, I mean who really gives a rats ass anyway... It's useless info and the same every year

Rice Moss has taken his game to a new level.

That was Spring 2006 and it's still my favorite.

Maybe it's good to not hear anything. Usually the guy who has a great spring and looks like a potential superstar contributor, ends up not being there in the Fall. Mike Williams, spring 2008. Marcus Sales, spring 2011.

Read this thread, for one.

I have read the thread.

And I see no indication that the fan base is "defeated."

I see some silly comments by those who never attend practice sessions - complaining about closed sessions.

And I have seen some very insightful comments confirming how silly the complaints really are.

If you feel defeated, that's your problem. If you apply reason, you will come to the realization that Marrone is doing what nearly all major college coaches do right now - worry about player and strategy development during the limited 15 practice sessions his team has been allotted.

You will recall that we lost 15 practice sessions in the fall by failing to go to a bowl game. That I'm sure has made a difference in his thinking this spring.

But, if you are correct - if the entire fan base desparately wants to see the team play this spring - and can't wait to do so - we should see a huge turnout on April 21, for the spring game.

I presume you'll be there. So, be sure to say hello.

Ah, yes...Delone Carter before his injury too I recall. otoh, remember hearing Freeney was unstoppable in 2001 and he was.

That's the problem and that's my point: No one wants to see them. The spring game will probably be the worst turnout in many years.

Although maybe you're correct and people are secretly fired up about a team coming off a five-game collapse to end last season and absolutely no changes to the offensive coaching staff.

For the record, I don't really care about Syracuse marketing the football program. If they want to do the bare minimum, fine. I don't think it's healthy for the program, but all I care about are wins and losses. It doesn't bother me personally, I just worry about what's best for the program. And I don't think minimizing the buzz around the program is for the best, but I guess we'll see.

I think this is something everyone is underplaying as to why practices have been closed. He figures if there aren't people or reporters are at the practice then the kids will focus instead of some of them trying to show off. Maybe I'm way off base here I don't know.

This is a colossal blunder by Marrone. Taking the fans out of the process isn't a way to garner and maintain interest in the program especially when "we" are facing a losing streak in September. I can only presume we can beat Stoney Brook and put at least one win in the column indicating such an event.:noidea:

That is not what Doug Marrone's coaching mantra has been in the past. He has repeatedly stated that the players work harder when the fans are watching. Something had to have changed between March 1, the announcement that 11 practices were open including the Spring Game & Rochester, and March 22nd when they issued this statement, "Syracuse University football spring practice sessions will be closed until further notice to focus on the development of the program."

This article came out the next day saying "practice closure only temporary." That statement is starting to resemble New York States declaration that Thruway tolls were only temporary, that was back in 1954.

Four of the open practices have been erased and seven practices have taken place. Two more open practices were to have occured before the team was scheduled to appear in Rochester on April 7. Is there any chance they will close that one too & only invite prospects, their families and local coaches?

Just got back from a High School Coaches Clinic from that was held at UNC. Larry Fedora was great to listen to a long with his entire staff. The first night, there was a huge reception with beer, all types of food, and all of the coaches/graduate assistants stayed until the last person left. Fedora told every coach in the beginning that while we were there, we had access to any part of their spring practice. I sat in on defensive meetings and then a defensive line meeting. I was about 4 feet away from the D-line while they were practicing during their spring practice. They had people with video cameras running around all practice recording stuff to put on their UNC Football blog. It was quite an experience. I would love to see something like that from SU.

By the way, UNC Defensive Coordinator Dan Disch is a great speaker and is going to do great things at UNC. I will tell you right now, UNC's defensive is going to play very out of control. He spoke about the importance of playing defense in controlled chaos. Bodies flying around. Making every player sprint to where the tackle was to "tap helmets". Their defensive philosophy is "getting in the black" which apparently means smacking people around as hard as you can, to the point right before the yellow flag gets thrown. It will be interesting to watch UNC, the turn around from Davis to Fedora is a complete 180.

I am curious as I have seen nothing in the media here in Carolina about any of the Spring Practices for the Carolina schools do you know if the Heels practices were open to the general public and media or were they controlling all access to the practices through their athletic website, which has been my impression.

Lets hear some your marketing ideas.

What would you do to improve the program?

I'm not being sarcastic. Tell us what you would do.

For the past three years spring practice has been open. Orangeyes, OrangeExtreme, Tomcat, DCCuse and a few others show up regularly. Me and a few others show up once in awhile.

The open practice thing has not translated into large Dome crowds or a groundswell of any kind of support - at least as far as I can tell.

The ticket prices are very low - that does not seem to make any difference. Instead we get complaints about $7 handling charges.

The team went to a bowl game at Yankee Stadium in Marrone's second year - defeating a well-coached K-State team with a decent offensive performance - apparently you don't see that as a positive.

Instead we're right back to where we always seem to be - what we always seem to read on this board, year after year dating back to the DeLeone days - your call to "replace the offensive coaches."

Sorry, but it's just the same old mantra that ignores the details of where the program is and has been and where it is going.

I can pretty much assure you that if the team performs well this fall, you and the rest will be back cheering them on and ignoring the closed practice issue.

What do you coach?

I coach defensive line for a high school in Eastern Carolina.
Their practices are not open to the public. There was no media there as well.

Their practices are not open to the public. There was no media there as well. Everything is being controlled by the athletic department. The only extra people who were in attendance were the coaches there for the clinic and a couple of recruits and their families.

The general tone is that they have been struggling with the transition from Butch to Larry. In speaking to some of the assistant coaches, they were very open with saying they have a long way to go. They are doing way too much thinking right now and not playing football which makes for some very sloppy football. The defense has been very aggressive and the coaches told us there have been fights between the Offense and Defense almost every day. They had a 120 play scrimmage on Wednesday and apparently 5 fights broke out in that time period.

One thing I will say, which I really like and plan to use in my upcoming football season. After every practice, they go in and watch video and grade how the players practiced the day before. The position coaches count how many times a player did something they weren't supposed to or was not giving maximum effort. The next day, at the end of practice the offense and defense split up and make really big circles. They then call out names of players. When your name is called, you sprint to the circle and the coach tells you how many times you "let the team down" the day before. The player then says in the middle of the circle "My name is so and so, and I let the team down 4 times." Then the team does 4 up downs and then the player sprints out of the circle. They then break down with their position coaches where the leaders of the positions get on the other people for doing stuff wrong. It was a really interesting concept, which I personally loved.
