Even if Zona beats Stanford and Cal this week, if we beat Wake and Duke any way we are #1? Of course, if Zona loses to one of those two and we beat Wake and Duke, yes, I would imagine we are #1.

Just trying to figure out how much cachet a win over Duke would hold at this point...

Zero chance of that happening. Arizona would have to lose.

Any way it matters?

As others have said, there's a certain amount of swagger that comes with being the #1 ranked team in America...for them and for us as fans. Plus, if we don't win it all, it's nice to say that at some point this season, we were ranked #1.

If we beat Wake and Duke then we may be back in the media's perception of a 'real' top 5. Nothing more, nothing less.

At absolute most we may gain a small handful of first place votes.

Although marsh is generally wrong. On this topic he is correct.

West genny is comprised of girly men and ugly womens.

We will gain a few #1 votes back, but not that many

1. If the main trigger in your mind is that we beat Duke... Arizona beat Duke as well on a neutral court. So the motivation for change has to be "cumulative" results, rather than a big win over Duke.

2. And the argument cannot be made from a cumulative basis.

If you want to look at top 25 wins.
Arizona would have 5,10,17 (none at home)
Syracuse would have 9,17,18 (all at home)

Advantage Arizona

In terms of wins vs other teams currently in tournament (or bubble):

Arizona would have Stanford, UCLA, Cal, Colorado (3 road)
Syracuse would have Minnesota, Cal, Baylor, UNC (3 neutral)

Draw (this is where Baylor sliding hurts)

3. Zona started higher and has not done anything to lose it. We have not done more, so how can we overtake them?

4. If we were blowing people away we may be overcome some of the factors above. But we have not been doing that.

We should be #2. Accept it. We have great chances at winning in April, and are basically equals to Zona on the floor.

If the main trigger in your mind is that we beat Duke... Arizona beat Duke as well on a neutral court. That will also act as something to reduce change.

That's more of the type of response that I was looking for...rather than the knee-jerk "good god, everyone's starting threads whining about something."

Sigh...when will you learn

Who was the last team tolose the #1 spot without losing?
College Football 2012 week 2

Preseason #1 USC beat Hawaii and #2 Alabama crushed #9 Michigan in Dallas then week 2 Alabama moved to #1 and USC moved to #2. Fun fact USC's next opponent was Syracuse at Metlife.

The polls are such a tremendously-flawed system that no one ought to take all that seriously.

Polls have their own logic and if you understand it you'll realize that they don't have all that much value in separating good teams from one another. Being #2 doesn't mean you are the second best team. You might be the 10th best team, but the logic of the polls has you at #2.

The key to doing well in them is t0 1.) Come into the season ranked at the top and 2) Have an easy schedule because try as they might the number of losses obviously has a tremendous affect on the voters.

We've been told that a win at the dome is worthless, so no.

Sorry, I meant in college hoops. There is a part of me that wants to s ay it has happened in the last 5 years, but it's really rare.

A more interesting question: how far do they move us down if we lose today or Saturday? We beat Pitt and lost first place votes.

Zonas win vs duke on a neutral court will be greater than Cuse's win vs duke home. No, we will still be Number 2!
