Next year were losing- ggive coach time to implement his system
2017- losing: don't have coach X recruits
2018- losing; the natives pick up pitchforks
2019- start over again.

After 17 years with one top 25 team its really exhausting to start again. plus im getting old.

Why do people keep posting about this 3 year cycle? I mean, there is no basis for it.

Pasqualoni's first two years were excellent, and while year #3 was disappointing, there was no great movement to get rid of him.

Robinson sucked. No one disputes this. There were people advocating that he be fired in year 3. Because he sucked. No one disputes this.

Marrone's year 3 was disappointing, but there was zero chance of him being fired. And he would almost certainly still be the head coach here today of he hadn't taken the Bills job.

And now Shafer.

So what in the past 25 years leads people to think that it is inevitable that we'll be hiring a new coach in 2019? I mean this is the FIRST TIME we've fired a coach after 3 years. Like ever.

I posted this under another topic but will repeat it here...

Here are some headlines we do not want to see;
1. Dungey declared ineligible due to multiple concussions
2. Culpepper & Lindsey Scott decommitt
3. Mahoney transfers to D2 school
That leaves Austin Wilson as the sole QB for 2016...

Lindsey Scott wanted to come to Syracuse, he sent his tape to us.
Dungey has one known concussion (no one here is a doctor, nor did they examine him)
Culpepper I kind of believe he comes here unless the new coach says no (I know the university is bound to him)
Mahoney most likely sticks out here, seems to really enjoy being here

Yeah I don't why next year is assumed we will suck. Will it be tough if we are out of the dome, sure. It might also bring the team and new coaching staff together too.

At this point, if we win 4 - 5 games next year but look exciting, I'll be happy.

Taken a bit literal. They wanted Grob gone after 3 years( rightfully so ) and if you remember many were calling for Marrone's head midway through the 4th . No it doesn't have to follow the exact timeline. we have been in the college football netherworld for a long time.

Hence why it is time to take action.

But who cares if people were calling for Marrone's head? He finished that year strong and, like I said, almost certainly would still be the head coach today had Buffalo not come calling (or another NFL team).

You're upset that some people get mad and want a coach fired? I mean, that happens EVERYWHERE. They just forced out a guy at LSU who won TWO national titles.

Why don't we worry about how the team actually performs and not worry about what some fans might post on a message board 3 years from now?

Oh Lord

Last 3 coaches. GRob was fired after 4, disgruntled Marrone quit after 4, and Shafer was fired after 3. That's why.

Yeah, three years is a fabrication.

We have enough talent to be respectable, ie bowl eligible, next season. That's the goal. If we struggle, well, we live with it when it happens.

Honestly, if a move was to be made, this was the year to do it. This team is stupid young overall, and will naturally grow in to a better unit over the next couple years. A new coach might just be able to kick that growth up a level, although certainly not guaranteed. Also, if we were to short a recruiting class, this is the year to do it being that we were only looking for 20 or so and again how much youth is currently on the 2-deep.

I think what has been shown enough is that Shafer just isn't strong enough as a game manager or planner to warrant holding on to him any longer. It hurts a little to say that because I liked him and his message overall, but it was obviously not working.

I don't care how gruntled Marrone was or not, he was offered a NFL HC gig. Who doesn't leave for that? SU didn't fire him.

And are we arguing that Robinson shouldn't have been fired?! What world am I living in?

You asked why people infer a 3 year cycle. I told you. I don't care who was fired and not sure why it matters that you are not arguing about Robinson. The average stay of our last three coaches is 3.33 years. and 2 of them were fired.

Oh Lord I believe I said I was tired and also sad, an emotion expressed by several posters. To me its a sad day. Of course SS will land on his feet and life will go on but for now I'm not happy. Im not mad at anyone.

People think you need to take 3 or 4 years to get good or for a new coach to "implement a system." It's just football. A good coach can turn it around overnight. The talent level at SU isn't bad right now. Some decent in-game decisions, a better gameplan and a new coach can win 6 or 7 games next year and then its off to the races.

It's just football, its really not that complicated for a new coach to step in and win right away with what we have

Yes, that's the math. But each of these past 3 coaches had very different circumstances, right? There's a lot of weird correlation = causation going on in this thread.

Sure, but you stated that this will happen again in 2019. The preponderence of evidence given SU's history is that it won't happen again in 2019.

Wait until the new coach sees our schedule in 2017.

FSU, LSU, Miami and Louisville on the road.

Clemson at home.

That might be a tough pill right now for BC or Wake. New coaches -- and they are still looking at 3 and 9.
It isn't all game plans and deciding when to punt, like a video game. Have to build the team with better recruiting, maybe some connections with junior colleges, off-season work.

I am not saying the past will dictate the future... but unless you are quibbling between 3 and 4 seasons... it happened 2 coaches ago and it happened for the most recent coach. And the one in the middle quit after 4. That's where the Groundhog Day gut reaction comes from.

Why are we guaranteed losing next year? Harbaugh took a crap Michigan team under Hoke and brought them to the Top 25 with the quickness.
Maybe not guaranteed a losing season. But SU won't get a Harbough, and SU football is not Michigan football.

A "crap" Michigan team still had great recruits. You can't compare our classes to theirs. That's exactly the difference between the high echelon teams and SU. Sure, you can win from the start with them because of their personnel. With SU, that's not happening. I am not saying SU will lose next year...but it is a ton harder at SU than Michigan. That's why we have had 3 coaches each lasting no more than 4 years and why, in part, it is hard to hire a coach that can get the job done.
