Wait until the new coach sees our schedule in 2017.

FSU, LSU, Miami and Louisville on the road.

Clemson at home.

Makes it easier for him to recruit. Kids love being in big games. Better crowds, better TV.

Plus LSU is an anomaly, and Miami basically is. We don't go back there for another 12 years.

SU vs VT in the Dome next year, each with new coaches. That will be different.

I'm sorry, the answer we were looking for is "Woe is us, we suck and will always suck, why do we even bother trying?"

But thanks for playing.

Why do people keep posting about this 3 year cycle? I mean, there is no basis for it.

Pasqualoni's first two years were excellent, and while year #3 was disappointing, there was no great movement to get rid of him.

Robinson sucked. No one disputes this. There were people advocating that he be fired in year 3. Because he sucked. No one disputes this.

Marrone's year 3 was disappointing, but there was zero chance of him being fired. And he would almost certainly still be the head coach here today of he hadn't taken the Bills job.

And now Shafer.

So what in the past 25 years leads people to think that it is inevitable that we'll be hiring a new coach in 2019? I mean this is the FIRST TIME we've fired a coach after 3 years. Like ever.
I think the obvious answer is that a lot of coaches coming in to a new situation will be bringing a different style of play, that often requires different types of players. I agree with you though, that it's more of a built-in excuse...and that a quality coach should be able to win with what he has in front of him.

Why are we guaranteed losing next year? Harbaugh took a crap Michigan team under Hoke and brought them to the Top 25 with the quickness.
a crap team with multiple top 25 recruiting classes... just playing devil's advocate here. Let's not call Harbaugh the next coming, its not like he walked into Rutgers and won a national title.

Maybe not guaranteed a losing season. But SU won't get a Harbough, and SU football is not Michigan football.
We need more bricks to compete.

A "crap" Michigan team still had great recruits. You can't compare our classes to theirs. That's exactly the difference between the high echelon teams and SU. Sure, you can win from the start with them because of their personnel. With SU, that's not happening. I am not saying SU will lose next year...but it is a ton harder at SU than Michigan. That's why we have had 3 coaches each lasting no more than 4 years and why, in part, it is hard to hire a coach that can get the job done.

If our recruiting is so bad that it needs a major upgrade, then there's even less reason to keep Shafer.

The next guy needs 2-3 consecutive top 40 classes.

This is why I don't get it when people say our talent level isn't that bad- yeah compared to what it was back in the B.E. we've seen an uptick but given we're in a big boy conference now we're gonna need a major upgrade pretty much across the board.

What if the new guy is an offensive guru who, by reputation and by Dome, is able to recruit a top flight QB here?

Didn't you say the other day in the NC State game thread that the QB is the difference in these games?

I'm still hoping Dungey is that guy...or Culpepper.

But, yeah, we need a top flight QB...and that will be a top priority if those two don't pan out.

I'm thinking the new guru will be great at developing them as well. With the two guys you mention, he should have a lot to work with. Just hope we haven't seen the last of Dungey with the concussions.

Don't forget Scott, who has impressive accolades.

Cupboard isn't bare at QB. Need a coach who can actualize their potential.

But who cares if people were calling for Marrone's head? He finished that year strong and, like I said, almost certainly would still be the head coach today had Buffalo not come calling (or another NFL team).

You're upset that some people get mad and want a coach fired? I mean, that happens EVERYWHERE. They just forced out a guy at LSU who won TWO national titles.

Why don't we worry about how the team actually performs and not worry about what some fans might post on a message board 3 years from now?

Oh Lord

I think it's also worth pointing out that we've had pretty bad head coaches. I mean, P was fine and had a long tenure to show for it. DM was solid and wouldn't have been fired -- even if people were angry on message boards. GRob was brutal and got canned. That's what happens. Shafer may not have been fired by every single AD in Coyle's spot, but it's pretty common for a new AD to want 'his' guy unless there is legit reason to keep the current guy. Shafer must've known he had to win a few games to keep his job and he didn't do it. I'm not really sure there' much to see here other than a couple bad coaching hires.

One thing I'm tired of is the new coach making a bad choice with his first Offensive Coordinator, which he then has to fix anywhere from 10 to 18 games into that OC's tenure.

Hopefully this streak ends because the new guy isn't going to fire himself.

How long has it been since we've had a coach who hires an offensive coordinator who knows how to pass the ball from the start?

i can't wait for next year. i think the bills just ran another sweep. mcnabb thought they lacked urgency
