From what I've been told, Wegmans hasn't been able to expand any further south because they're reaching the end point of their current distribution setup. So while they've taken over NoVA, they've only gone as far south as Fredericksburg (and more recently, Charlottesville) because they can still distribute from their current centers.  Plus, they like to do a slow, methodical build out and only do a few stores a year to ensure quality control.

The next step to expanding in Carolinas is a distribution center further south..and I heard that a while back they had purchased land west of Richmond in the event that they ever did want to expand (nothing definitive at that time, only bought land because it was a good location / deal and made sense for future expansion).  Take it all with a grain of salt...but it's clear that they entered the NoVA market and absolutely crushed it in a few years.  They definitely could do the same in the rest of VA and in Carolinas if they wanted to.
