development into a legitimate D-1 player who has the ability to alter the outcome of a close game , and may some day play the game for serious money. Granted his weight loss has contributed greatly to his improved play, but I would have to think that the year he spent under Bernie's tutelage helped him a lot.

Yes.

Since when do we recruit 'non-legitimate D-1 players?'

He came in with this potential. While in high school, he showed glimpses of everything he's doing now. I would very much like to know how you can ascertain what skills or development are attributable to a position coach. There's no metric for discerning how a player would have developed under a different coach. You could just as easily posit that Melo would have been this good LAST year if we had a better 'big man' coach. Why wasn't the weight and conditioning dealt with before his freshman year?

Not sure, at this point, what would motivate anyone to give Bernie credit for anything.

Who is the Bernie you speak of?

I guess everyone would like to have Bernie permanently disappear, and I understand why people feel that way. I happen to think, however, that while Melo's hard work and weight loss should be applauded, I also think that the guy who worked with him all last year when Melo was clueless about how to play the game at this level deserves some recognition.

Que the corny line like
No doubt he worked hard for Bernie and kept it up. Oh Lord

I don't.

That's not the point. The point is that Melo has shown a great deal of improvement and his position coach until recently was Fine. It doesn't matter what could have been. We're talking about what actually happened and who deserves credit for that.

Whatever Fine did in his personal life has no bearing on the accomplishments in his professional life (other than getting fired, of course). Ty Cobb was a despicable human being who may have killed a man. He's still one of the greatest baseball players of all time. D.W. Griffith, Leni Riefenstahl, Roman Polanski and Woody Allen are all considered influential filmmakers, despite their questionable personal backgrounds. Some of history's greatest leaders were adulterers and/or drug users.

Melo is the latest in a series of big men who have shown considerable improvement as sophomores. The one constant in all that time has been Fine.

THANK YOU.

You're right. Bernie never developed anything here. Rony, DC, Etan, Otis, Reafsnyder, Watkins, Rick Jackson, Onuaku...all those guys developed on their own and improved dramatically despite BF's continued insistence that they go on the Derek Brower Happy Meal workout plan.

Bernie deserves credit, most certainly. But not all. Fab deserves a lot for simply taking the initiative to get himself in better shape. And I think Hopkins deserves some too because he instilling Fab with confidence and fire.

If he molested kids then he deserves credit for nothing other than hurting the program, betraying his friend of 50 years who supported him and being a sick monster. I could care less if he taught Melo a spin move. Sorry, that's just my opinion.

I think they would have improved a lot FASTER under the guidance of someone else.

let me see...Melo was a zilch last year...a phenom bust if you will...he played in World Games all summer...he also lost a lot of weight...he has finally shown some progression...not sure which coach helped him out...but why are we dwelling on the past...there are times when you move on and look to the future...this is ONE OF THOSE TIMES

Don't forget Damone Brown and Hakim Warrick. Few thought they would develop into NBA players (although Brown didn't really catch on, he still made some rosters). And both of them made the trademark leap as sophomores.

Bernie Fine has been a ******* piece of furniture since 2000. This has way more to do with Hop than anyone else.

Hop hasn't been working with Melo for very long. Melo came up with the "empty seat" idea for a reason.

Seriously to not give Bernie any credit is rediculous. It would imply he was just loitering during all the time they put in and the school was dumb enough to pay him for it. If a fan gets credit for even being at the game wearing the team colors, while remaining silent then bernie deserves some credit.

Got to say though Melos best basketball has came since Hop took the reigns strangely. Unless he was just saving it for Big East play.
