How they look to me so far ...

Choppa reminds me of Mookie Jones. Hope he far exceeds Mookie (it won't be that hard).
I actually kind of agree with that. Choppa will be what we hoped Mookie would be, I am sure of that.

It took until the middle to end of December for us not to look completely ridiculous on defense, just as all our biggest guys were going down. Somehow, Red made it functional for a good stretch of the season.

Up until then, as I remember it anyway, our offense was hero ball and bad fast breaks where people usually made the wrong decision.

After learning Defense 101, I felt like Red began teaching them Motion Offense 101 in January, and by February, our offense had more motion, back screens, cuts through the lane, 3 man weave, etc., than we did before.
Appreciate your detailed, thoughtful analysis.
But our defense looked ridiculous all year.
  • Tue, Jan 2 @ Duke L86-66
  • Sat, Jan 13 @ North Carolina L103-67
  • Sat, Feb 3 @ Wake Forest L99-70
  • Wed, Feb 7 vs Louisville W94-92
Then NC State, ND, NC State (ACCT), etc.

This is an area we have to improve.
And giving up 80+ points to LeMoyne is not a good start.

These are all fair points. But in the 8 games before Duke, we went 7-1. We beat Cornell, Oregon, Georgetown and Pitt among the 7 wins.

Over that stretch, from Nov. 22 to the end of the calendar year, we held our 8 opponents (including UVa, who kicked our butts), to an average of 40% from the field, and 28% from three. That's actually better than average defense.

After that, our 2 centers (Hima and McLeod) got hurt, and Benny was suspended, then kicked off the team. Three of our four biggest guys gone after 13, 14 and 18 games played.

If the team stays together and stays healthy, I believe that Autry can coach them up. It's not good now, but like I said in another post, we didn't have our first good game last year until the 7th game of the season, but then we played well and won 7 of 8. And then it all fell apart, and somehow we still won 20 games.
