Anyone think that red-shirting Cooney may be a mistake?

With 340 or so teams, we are in the top 1/3. Not great but not bad. And yes, we are well up there in defensive type stats. I don't think I ever remember an SU team where defense was the face of the team and not offense.

Don't want to disagree too much, as obviously you are still giving the guys credit. But I think we are better than good, despite the ranking. Like our scoring, the strength is in the balance, and yet despite that balance, we still possess guys who will take (and dare I say, MAKE, that big shot if need be).

No. Look how good Rautins was as a 5th year senior. I think Cooney can be at least that good.

All I read was the title of this thread and my answer is no! MCW is playing his ass of to get minutes.

I think people kind of forget that a few of the players on this team would be "really good" on any other team and probably start. I could go through a few on the team that could score 18-20 a game...would that be considered really good? The fact that some of them play only 15-20 minutes a game tells me a lot. It tells me they won't have the stats to show how really good they are I guess. lol

Why is he going to redshirt 2yrs? Cooney will struggle to find time nxt year...
That depends on what Dion does. If Dion stays I think he'll play like MCW this year. If Dion leaves then Cooney is first guard off the bench and our only guard off the bench?

Not a mistake. Because of its defensive pressure and ability to block shots, this year's team only needs 3s to bust open a game, with very few games where they'll need a "must 3" shot. If they need to play catch-up ball, their press, steals and blocks can do that just as well. The Orange has capable 3-point shooters, and they'll get better as the season goes on. Clearing up the backcourt logjam next year gives Cooney a chance to play meaningful minutes, like MCW is getting this year.-VBOF
