I've noted this in the past but there are amazing parallels between the fortunes of the two biggest football programs in NY State... The Bills and Orange for those who have no idea what I am talking about. This week brings another big parallel in that if either team loses this week I think you are seeing tbe beginning of the end for the two head coaches. For the Orange of they lose to a pretty crappy wake forest team it will undo any good will with a semi-competotive blow out last week against FSU. Not only that but it also probably eliminates us from bowl contention as Wake is by far the most winnable game left on the schedule.

For the Bills, there are already calls for Hackett's head and rumblings for HCDM to go as well after last weeks loss to the Patsies. The Bills have clearly mismanaged their Oline which is terrible given their head coach is an ex-oline man. Additionally it's pretty clear Marrone is playing way too conservatively and not to lose which is the best way to guarantee losses against good teams. To add to the drama, the Bills have a new owner who might or might not clean house. The Vikings game this weekend is one of the most winnable games on the schedule and if the Bills lose I think there is no way they make the playoffs without significant changes in strategy.

My prediction, Syracuse wins and the Bills lose. Hackett gets canned or relieved of his duties and it's the beginning of the end for Marrone. The orange get a good win against Wake and set up for a bowl game run.

In my opinion, Shafer is not coaching for his job this season.

Marrone is not coaching for his job this week or next week.

But, if I have to pick who loses his job first, at this point, I would say Marrone.

It is never good to be the incumbent head coach of a losing team that has new ownership.

no way in hell pegula does anything before next year, if that

his feet aren't wet yet, they're not even near the pool

I don't think either gets fired this week or inseason no matter what happens. But I think a loss by the Bills this week changes the probability that he is the Bills head coach next year from a little north of 50% to well under 50%. If the Bills lose next week and go undefeated the rest of the year does he get fired? Of course not. But I think this is a very very big week for both coaches.

i'd put Marrone's chances of sticking around (minus a .500 plus record) at 10%. Why wouldn't you bring in your own guy. Shafer I say gets 2 years minimum to turn things around.

of course if Urkel the AD leaves all bets are off.

If Brandon and Whaley stay, Marrone gets another year. They can't fire him and expect Pegula to trust them to pick the next coach.

Similar case with Shafer, he should be fine, but if Gross goes, then all bets are off.

Shafer isn't going anywhere. Nor should he be at this point. He will get at least 1-2 more years and he still has 6 games this year to show he can right the ship. Just came off a brutal 3 game swing with a plethora of injuries and also switched coordinators. Give the guy a break at this point

yeah, shafer is not coaching for his job right now, but if the Orange dont beat wake...and then its clemson week?? ohh boy.

things will be looking pretty bleak up there.

the importance of this week cannot be emphasized enough.

as for marrone, well...every NFL coach this side of belicheat, pete carroll, tomlin & TC...although TC could be canned at the end of the year, are basically on a week to week basis.

Agreed, I am not saying it will be a bed of roses if he tanks the rest of the year, but he wont be fired. MArrone is in a very very tough spot, we shall see what happens, nobody really knows

Which, regarding TC, is a joke. He's led the GMen to 2 Super Bowl wins in the last 7 years. Most fan bases would give their left nut for what the Giants have accomplished over that span.

Unfortunately, in the NFL, you're only as good as your last game. Reese needs to help Coughlin out and put together a fecking OL!

shafer is back regardless of how we finish. I think that Doug needs to make the post season to keep his job

If Gross didn't fire Robinson after year 3 then there is no way on Earth, absent a massive scandal, that Shafer would be fired after year 2.

If the Bills don't make the playoffs this year they should probably get rid of Marrone. Data suggests that NFL HCs who don't make the playoffs in their second season (and certainly their third) rarely pan out. Might as well get crackin' with the new owner's choice at that point.

Selling Frank Reich at San Diego to Buffalo fans will be like selling buffalo chicken pizza to Syracuse women at 2 am on a Friday Night

It would be a great higher for many reasons. Doug is really a dead man walking if he doesn't make playoffs. He will be on the Texans staff in a matter of minutes in some capacity. Too lazy to look but I bet BOB is acting as his own OC at this point, probably room for Doug over there for sure. Wheatley will be on the UM staff next year as well. Bring Donnie Henderson back as the DB/ safety coach

Coaches are coaching for their jobs every week. it all adds up.

Marrone will at least have his job through the end of the year, Shafer through 2015. Shafer would have to totally tank to get fired then. Marrone just has to remain around .500 for them look elsewhere. The NFL isn't about "building a program". it's about winning now.
