At number 33 in the way too early NBADraft.net 2017...

That would be awesome. It all comes down to his offense. If he can hit the 15 footer, make layups, and rebound like he did in Durham, he's got a chance. May also be harder with a deeper team this year though.

No offense to Tyler, but he would have to completely revolutionize his offensive game to get a sniff at the NBA. Think about Rak:
  • 2 inches taller, extra 4 inches of standing reach
  • rim protection
  • an impressive post game
  • a 15 foot jump shot
Rak got drafted at 36. Tyler can't do the first two on that list, so in order to get drafted, he'd have to get the last two and then something else. His rebounding is arguably better than Raks, at least his offensive rebounding, but NBA teams don't really care about offensive boards, and Tyler is also helped in that respect by the fact that he doesn't get covered (and therefore boxed out) on the offensive end (think Andre Roberson for OKC in the GS series). So what else could he add? It would have to be playmaking or three point shooting--and frankly, I don't see the potential for either there.

Not when the one thing is rebounding and you're his size.

Kenneth faried proves otherwise at 6'6'

However, Boheim will pull Roberson if he shoots those 15 footers and therefore Tyler always looks hesitant taking them...making it hard for Tyler to improve his shooting if he would need to be a 3 spot in the NBA...also no discernible 3 point shot is going to be a major setback given his height

It's not totally out of the realm of possibility. Dennis Rodman had a similar frame to Robes, and TR has a rebounding tenacity...

It's July 9th.
The list begins to have relevance in about 8 or 9 months.
Unless you declare for the draft, and you haven't appeared on any mocks to that point, in which case they are retroactively accurate.

If you can believe the numbers Roberson is an inch taller than Rodman, but Rodman was also a tenacious defender. A lot of added value there.

I don't think anyone thinks he is going to be Rodman, but because of his rebounding ability, he will get a shot at the next level.

He's 6'8".

Outside of size there isn't much similar between Rodman and Roberson. Rodman led the NBA almost every year in rebounding, he was a level above everybody else in the NBA along with the defense you mentioned.

It's an insult to put Roberson in that category.

I agree, but his ticket to the NBA would be as an energy guy who rebounds and creates extra possessions.

It would be hard to carve out a roster spot when, in NBA terms, your only discernable skill is offensive rebounding and you are the size of a small forward at that level.

And that offensive rebounding skill has been inconsistent at the college level. I hope he does get a chance but it seems like those who were drafted for rebounding in the past were able to bring it game after game consistently. Hopefully he can do that this season.

I would expect him to be more consistent as a senior. And that's the other thing working against him as an NBA prospect; he'll be a senior. He can still be a terrific college player (as he's already proven at times) and will surely be able to play professionally somewhere after next season.

I totally agree. I also expect him to build off the NCAA and be more consistent as a senior.

I commend the OP for starting this thread, but personally am going to withhold judgment for now. It's certainly within the realm of possibility, and barring injury I see him getting paid to play somewhere, at least. What I find interesting is that if someone where to speculate about this a year ago, I think they might have been laughed off the board. No? Here's to having a chance.

Personally just wanted to stir some discussion up as I thought even speculation about him being drafted was a bit iffy.

However, if he consistently plays with fire like he did in March and against Duke theres not a better player on the offensive boards in College Basketball.

Granted, the NBA doesn't value offensive rebounding as much, but if he can get that mid-range down, ft's closer to 80% and develop rim defending skills. Who knows.
