out his desk this morning? He doesn't have his team prepared and clearly can't make adjustments during the game. He's worthless. Fanbase should be camping at his house, how dare he...NDST #2 in country, Villanova #8.

He and Shafer both are head of two elite programs with tremendous talent that should be good enough at all times to just overwhelm any lesser opponent, those kids at nova and ndst can't beat such talented programs just ask their fans!!!

NC State beat Ga Southern by only one point also. Their coaching staff should clean out their offices too.

Very true IB. The only simile I can come up with so that SU's basketball leaning fan base can grasp it is that these high FCS teams are equivalent to high basketball mid-majors such as VCU , Wichita State or dare I say it, Dayton. Essentially , because the football season is so short and every game is a playoff game , the victory over Villanova was like us scratching out a 1 point win over Dayton with Ennis being ejected in the first half. And this victory should be looked at in the same light as that would have been in the NCAA basketball tourney; Survive and advance. Would we have been happy with that win over Dayton , your damn right we would have been.

First off Iowa State is not an elite program. They are a P5 team, but this post doesn't mitigate any of this board's frustration with Shafer: NDSU would smoke Villanova as well. They are 2x defending FCS champions they beat Kansas state who won 8 games last year.

That performance on Friday nite was embarrassing. We were dominated by Villanova. We would have been smoked by NDSU. We are suppose to get off out coaches back because Iowa State go beat down? No, this was supposed to be a good year for SU if we get 6-6 right now I would be happy.

Elite just like Syracuse. I want Rhodes and Shafer fired. Top 10 fcs programs be damned. Suppose to be a good year? We are 1 game in.

I don't understand what getting on our coaches back two days later is worth the effort? Flush and move on.

That's what the team will be doing.

Agreed. The "their suck is worse than ours" is not a winning mentality. Who cares about Iowa St? Misery loves company, but it doesn't make what happened palatable.

I get what you're satin IB, but if you don't know FCS football well -- ND State is like UConn women's basketball. They are significantly better than any team in FCS. Nova isn't in the same ballpark as NDSU. Nova is a solid team tho, and I was concerned they would give SU fits. I was hoping o see a bit more out of our guys though, and I don't think I'm wrong in that opinion.

Iowa State is not elite like Syracuse. We are 15th in all time wins. Iowa State is under .500 ALLTIME in their history with 0 elite bowl wins or winners. Iowa State is on the level of Wake Forest or Rutgers.
NDSU would beat us down badly if we played like we did on Friday.

All you can do. Taken me 20 years to figure that out. Shafer has proven he can get the team to bounce back and they will. Move on, keep HUNT in the game and should be fine. Now when we beat Louisville or Duke these posters will be running to Costco to buy cases of Jergens when it comes to discussing Shafer and this team.

I think we all realize that our coordinators will have their ups and downs. If you don't well where were you last year ? We didn't replace them

So are you officially lost?

Robinson may be the best player in FCS this year.

I'm confused what does Iowa St have to do with Syracuse?

Really? You need to give John Robertson some respect. He is as good of college QB that there is at any level. In fact you need to give the entire Villanova team some respect , and , the good thing about FCS is that they have a playoff. Which means that it is likely that Nova will meet NDSU and settle it on the field. I can also tell you at that point , the NDSU coaching staff will not be as smug and sanguine as you project the ease of them winning that game.

We aren't on the team. Legit conservations are going to take place on message boards. If you was to avoid this talk that is your right. However, people are rightfully frustrated and as long as individual players aren't wrongfully criticized it's all fair game.

Seeing threads yesterday reminded me of the people who wanted Marrone out halfway through the 2012 season. It's really amazing how resistant some people are to learning anything.

You are right, I have learned that we are currently an elite program where Iowa St is on the same level as Rutgers and wake forest. No comparing the two

As much as I love my team, Syracuse is not an Elite program. That is why we were considered a Baron or Knight when we were very good but never a King, those are the Elite programs. OSU, Michigan, ND, Texas, etc.

And Nova is on the same level as ND State, same with Appalachian State, Ga Southern, Youngstown State. They are all not spectacular all the time but they are on the same level, everything is cyclical.

EDIT: Not to say we can't play and compete with the Kings (We know who they are) because historically we have and have beaten many of them but nobody on the planet who knows college football would put us in their category.

I don't agree that if we played NDSU they would have beat us down. Are they better than Villanova, most likely. But just because one particular team gave us fits and specifically because we couldn't handle their QB, does not mean that another team would just do the same thing.

Every single game is different. We sit here on our computers and expect that because of the performance we saw on Saturday that that means a whole bunch of different assumptions. 3 - 5 games from now, we can start talking about what the real flaws are on this team but to do it after 1 game, regardless of opponent is illogical.

The only things that I know for sure right now are that the talent level on this team is far superior to the talent level 3 - 5 years ago. That is an absolute fact. However, that doesn't mean as a result we are going to smoke everyone we play just because we are "supposed" to be far more talented and better. We play the game because anything can happen.
The other thing that is a fact, we don't know how well this coaching staff is going to do long term at SU. We love all the feel good stories between seasons about how well they work together, families hang with each other, and they want to be here. I'm not willing to just dump on them because the game sucked watching and left a bad taste in my mouth. I think that feel good means something long term for the stability of the SU football program. I also think Shafer has the b@lls to realize if something isn't working and move on from that or do what needs to happen in order to fix the issue. Marrone could have cared less, seemingly, about the fact the attendance was pretty good for game 1 of the season against Villanova. I think Shafer is incredibly disappointed the team wasn't able to excite the fan base at the game or people watching. I think that means something too. I'm also willing to give some of these guys a break as they figure out how to be better coaches. I never got down on Hackett when he was here, I was frustrated but I could see what he was attempting to do but was unable to because of penalties, poor execution, and lack of talent. I have no idea what McDonald is trying to do or what the offensive identity is supposed to be. Maybe he's still trying to figure that out and I'm actually o.k. with that, for a little while.

I was incredibly disappointed by what I saw. But I'm also not a dummy and after taking a step back and settling down for a couple days, the logical part of my brain (that isn't very big) realized it's one m____ f____ing game and I'm still going to go online today and buy tickets to Maryland because I want to see us kick their @sses.

Yes. He gave a very fast and athletic P5 conference defense fits and almost singlehandedly beat them. He will run up 500 yards a game against many weaker FCS teams. The brain trust on this keeps whining about the D's inability to contain him. How do you contain a guy that plays QB like John Elway but is as good a running back as Craig James .

GSU beat Florida in the Swamp last year and is now a member of the Sun Belt Conference. Made the step up this season...

We weren't dominated. C'mon.

But North Dakota State is still on an entirely different level. Robertson is amazing, believe me I've seen him play enough. He's a great player, and just the type that tends to give us some problems. I was actually pleased that SU contained him as much as they did. Most of the issues with Robertson came from rushing too hard, and being ushered past him. Gave him a chance to step up and continue the play. I wasn't surprised we missed tackles on him, he's just that type of player.

With that said, some of the Nova receivers getting as open as they did time after time is a concern to me.

Well NDSU is like Kentucky Bball but Nova is like Cuse Bball; 30 year coach 1 NC , old eastern school and city , player of the candidate. The oracle says the outcome of that contest is not certain.
