Atlantic Coast Conference Launches Search for Next Commissioner

With Swofford announcing his retirement, never saw this coming. I'm glad they made an official announcement.

This should be a very interesting process. A northern school Chairs the ACC BoD, probably not something your Dukes and North Carolina peeps are loving going into this process. A very good chance for that "good old boy" southern vicegrip to lose some power in the outcome of this search.

As long as he brings Notre Dame and Texas with him the Notre Dame AD would be a great choice. Would end the North Carolina control over the conference finally.

Well, as that is the North Carolina plan, if Swarbrick were to become ACC Commissioner and oversee ND football entering fully, then would North Carolina get any credit?

Texas coming along is the most interesting issue left in conference realignment. Nebraska has backed down to the Big Ten in part because there will not be a Big XII to return to if Texas decides to end its run. And that could happen.

Texas-Notre Dame played annually as a conference game would become the nation's biggest inter-regional rivalry almost immediately - ND-SC has the great history, but the Pac matters less every half decade.

You can ask Terry D, but that is a game ND and Texas want to happen. If they were both in conference it could be a crossover game.

If Notre Dame and Texas want to play so badly why aren’t they playing now?

I follow this stuff all and I think this rumor is just an internet one.
Texas and Notre Dame have different missions. Texas likes their status quo and Notre Dame does as well.
Thus they likely do have an agreement to support each other but they don’t need an annual football game.
If Texas went independent then I am sure Notre Dame would support them but Texas likes their current deal.

The Co-Chairmen of the Advisory Committee are the current President of Notre Dame (Father John Jenkins) and the former Professor/Dean/Provost of Notre Dame (now Wake Forest President), Nathan Hatch.

Nathan Hatch worked at ND from 1975 until he became President of Wake Forest in 2005. His three kids all graduated from ND.

I wonder if Jack Swarbrick caps off his career as the next ACC Commissioner?

P.S. There are lots of other significant ND ties regarding the upper levels of the ACC leadership.

Duke AD Kevin White was the AD at Notre Dame before Swarbrick.

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham was an Associate AD at ND for years. He worked at ND from 1988 until 2002.

Boo Corrigan, the AD at NC State, graduated from ND in 1990 and was an Associate AD there from 2004 until 2008.

(I think that about covers Tobacco Road..Wake Forest, North Carolina, Duke and NC State.yep.)

ND and Texas played each other in a home and home series a few years ago, but yes, they do not play often.

I am sure that the two schools talk once in a while about playing, but the 5 game ACC commitment does make it a bit harder to do, plus ND's schedules are made out long in advance.

The two schools have a good relationship, but Texas wants to dominate its conference and ND wants to stay out of one (two different goals).

The relationship was stronger when Deloss Dodds was at Texas. Not sure about the strength of the relationship with new Texas leadership.

I don't see Texas joining the ACC. I still believe that ND football will go back to indy status if Covid allows.

We shall see. 2025 will tell the tale.

The ACC loves using the private schools in committees and searches. #FOIA

If Texas bolts in a few years could they come in like ND?

5 FB games and Olympic Sports

Another option is a looser confederation of 20 schools.

Four groups of 5 schools. You play everyone in your group every year and rotate through the other 3 pods.

This allows Texas to bring OU, OSU, Kansas and one more like Texas Tech, TCU or Baylor.

TBH, I think it’s better to offer ND a Tejas deal than try to rationalize fitting Duke into the sans conferences as TexTech.

Worst case that offering a partial creates is that the B12 is further destabilized, as Texas has more legitimate leverage over the misfit toys. The best case is that we all get the Horns as a partial.

Swarbick would be a poor choice. Plus, his ND affiliation will only cause conspiracy theories about ND this and that.. Just a big name IMO. I would do an extensive search of all conferences...including G5. There would be some commish or deputy who is up to job

Who is more qualified than Wildhack?

I think this depends on what you think the role is of the commissioner.

If you want a ceremonial figurehead, who hobnobs with the ADs, presidents and press, tells folky stories and can't get enough of Greensboro, you look for another Swofford.

If you want someone to run the ACC like a business, with contacts throughout the country, with a special understanding of and prioritization of the relationship between the conference and its television partner, you want someone with John. Exactly like John actually.

That said, we need him to stay in Syracuse. Go hire another 'good ole boy' type who is clueless on business and let John help guide him through the tough decisions.

He's been an AD for only four years. What makes you think he's so qualified to be the commissioner of fifteen ADs?

Was half listening to Packer and Durham this morning and John’s name was among the first to be mentioned.

Sorry if I'm thick, but I'm assuming this is sarcasm?

Bubba is sharp. Hes my pick.
I really think it could be a deputy commisioner type. Probably dome name we do not know. I doubt it is an AD. Maybe already in the ACC executive pool. Strong legal background. I'd bet on an attorney who is a known negotiater. That is my guess.

Fine, I'll do it.

1st thing I am doing is moving the League Office to NYC.
