Recording studios and a flight simulator? What a waste of money. Hey donors, do something worthwhile and give to some foster kids or something.
Not sure why people feel they have the right to tell others how to spend their own money. Did you suggest Melo give his donation to foster kids? Thought not.
The revenue generated by sales and payroll taxes in and of themselves will reap large revenue increases.
If you want to support foster kids with your money, more power to you.

I mean a flight simulator is a bit absurd.

Agree. No one has the right to tell people how to spend their money. I’m sure when those donors all ponyed up they were promised flight simulators and said hell yes we’re in.

I’m as much spend your money as you want and please don’t tax me as anyone. But when I see people donating to something like this I just assume they inherited the money.

when you can't pay people with cash and have to pay them with perks, you end up spending way way way more. give those players a choice between twenty bucks and a free flight simulator, they'll take the twenty bucks

Yep, I criticize people that are crazy wealthy that spend their money on ridiculous things like flight simulators in a football training complex when there are homeless and hungry children. And I don't feel bad about it either.

I do what I can to help foster families and people in similar situations. There are a lot of people that do, I don't think I'm anything special. I wish I could do more. The fact is we have the resources in this country to do much more than we do but we prioritize stupid things in the hopes that a few 17 year old kids will help us win games. Then, when those kids that have been given a crap life through no choice of their own grow up not knowing how to be productive citizens, we essentially blame them for their poor choice of parents or situation. But hey, that future heisman winner thought the flight simulator was cool, so it's all worth it.

Notice I didn't criticize any football related stuff, even though that is likely excessive too. Rest assured, if we started putting in stupid stuff, I'd be critical of it. What in the MeloCenter is there just to be ridiculous and not actually help the players improve?

Even if they were paid, this stuff would still happen. It's an arms race and big time boosters will continue to fund more and more ridiculous stuff.

I certainly wouldn't tell anyone how to spend their money (unless it was on something disgustingly illegal like buying child sex slaves, for the sake of example), but I can judge whoever I want, whenever I want. It's comes with the territory of being conscious.

It's somewhat perverse that an educational institution, funded by taxpayer money, in a state not exactly known for its public educational systems, would take in and spend $91 m on football crap. You'd think donors might be encouraged to consider other "needs?"

I am sure there is something to your trickledown/spend money to make money position here. However, there has to be a massive diminishing return on a project like this. Let's say the facility gets a program like Auburn an extra win per year. How much money does that additional win bring in? They already sell out games, sell tons of merch, receive millions in donations (clearly), have a huge TV deal, etc. Gluttony and excess, and public education, should not go hand-in-hand.

Like I’ve said ad nauseum, I’m glad Syracuse is a research university that happens to have a relatively competitive athletic department. I’m also glad people like cto donated so generously to the Newhouse school and not an on campus Dave and Busters at Manley. Priorities someday will matter again

and to think they are the red headed step child in the state......#MustBeNice

Do we have a barber on the payroll at the Cuse?

And the widening gap between the crazies and the relatively normal will ultimately hurt overall interest in the sport.
Most of the SEC fans I converse with...they don't care. They would be okay with 24-36 teams nationwide playing big time football with no spending cap...as long as they are below the Mason-Dixon Line.

They are spoiled for choice down here and uber provincial in thinking. TV and willing boosters bring in so much cash to the schools and they waste it on stupid sh/t like flight simulators, recording studios, diva locker rooms, and lazy rivers. You can just imagine the players distractions and what little time they spend in academics.

Truly a different world down here.

Absolutely. I'm in SEC country too (Knoxville). The only northern football they talk about is how they think the B1G and Notre Dame are a sham and Charles Woodson screwed Peyton Manning out of the Heisman.

They're like that with everything though. Even during basketball season you never hear any talk here of teams outside of the SEC despite the conference sucking most of the time. They are the ultimate group of self-centered fan bases.

Good post. As much as I love football and shiny toys I think it’s getting to be a little too much. The schools with these facilities win more games. That makes games more predictable.

Why can't wealthy people do both? Donate to support the program they love and be charitable to many needy organizations.

It’s not that they can’t.

It’s that they don’t.

Most of the SEC footprint is the amongst the lowest per capita in income, education, literacy, you name it.

Just imagine if half of all the frivolous $ thrown at footbaw went towards programs to help those people and improve their lives?

But - you don’t get to tailgate and dress up in your alma mater colors to cheer for a new food bank, soup kitchen, or homeless shelter.

So I don't have the time to research this, but I'm going out on a limb that the person spending 5 mil at an SEC school is also donating to important things like children's hospitals, etc.

Look at our own lives, I spend money on tix, but also donate to charitable organizations.

I would imagine the bigger problem is government/taxes and not enough money to go around.

Lol, is Syracuse any different? I moved to Orlando in '99, and heard mention of SU on local sports radio more than once, often UCF fans wishing they were us.

People are naturally attached to what's nearby and who's winning.
