Auburn

Lol, is Syracuse any different? I moved to Orlando in '99, and heard mention of SU on local sports radio more than once, often UCF fans wishing they were us.

People are naturally attached to what's nearby and who's winning.
It is. When I lived in CNY I listened to a number of national sports talk radio shows. I heard SU fans frequently talking about teams outside of the Big East Conference with good insight. Shortly after moving to knoxville the one national sports talk show on local radio was replaced by a couple local hacks and the vast majority of college sports fans I talk too have their heads stuck in the SEC sand.

Orlando isn't really the heart of SEC country.

So I don't have the time to research this, but I'm going out on a limb that the person spending 5 mil at an SEC school is also donating to important things like children's hospitals, etc.

Look at our own lives, I spend money on tix, but also donate to charitable organizations.

I would imagine the bigger problem is government/taxes and not enough money to go around.
Lot's of studies show that on average, the wealthier the demographic the smaller the percentage of income given to charity. They probably give more money in total. Neither is the point, however. The point is, when there is a huge need that exists, donating money to frivolous stupid things just to be cool is money not being given to the exisiting need. It demonstrates a mix-up in priorities. People have the right to use their money however they choose. That doesn't mean their choices are above ridicule.

Not sure why people feel they have the right to tell others how to spend their own money. Did you suggest Melo give his donation to foster kids? Thought not.
The revenue generated by sales and payroll taxes in and of themselves will reap large revenue increases.
If you want to support foster kids with your money, more power to you.
Meh. The idea that it’s ok to do whatever you want with your money, while technically correct, is morally dubious. That there’s a problem with the vast sums of money directed to an arms race to convince 17 year olds to play a sport where they don’t get paid, should not be shocking.

And I’d bet the people writing those huge checks to build these things are writing those donations off. Not sure it evens out.

That is interesting and agreed everyone is up for ridicule, but just googling that quickly and an econofact article came out describing that it is actually a pretty flat percentage throughout the income bracket. I would also guess higher incomes have the ability to volunteer more, and it seems on a quick search that this is correct also.

Believe me, I personally think it is obscene, but it is just a drop in a bucket and they are helping a university they obviously care about.

Were you annoyed when SU received that 25 million for athletics? Not combative, just curious your overall take.

I actually did shake my head a bit at the 25 million dollar gift. My feelings were mixed. I understand that there is currently a price to be paid to participate in big time college sports. On one hand I was glad that maybe SU was given the chance to keep up with its peers. On the other, I think the price is far to high to keep up and wish there was a way to keep it down. Two reasons: 1) I think there are more responsible ways to spend donations. 2) There is supposed to be some degree of fairness in college athletics that has been eroding away for quite a while.

I flew a 757 flight simulator 20 years ago, it was a blast. Best video game ever - I flew into the Hollywood sign per my instructors recommendation. Kids are going to love it!

My son is considering several schools for engineering, including Auburn. Will also try to walk onto the track team, depending on where he ends up.

Whats interesting is he is also considering Clemson, which just recently decided to close Men's track and cross country. Athletic department claimed it was not specifically to comply with Title IX but rather to save $2MM annually, which was needed.

Clemson has been called out for spending so much $ on football in particular with perks similar to Auburn, while also claiming the need to save $ by cutting men's track. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out at Auburn.

P.S. There is a push to save Clemson's men's track so we'll se what happens there.

It's ridiculous that between football revenue and donations that they should have to cut track and field. Somehow schools could afford all of these other sports before they started recieving revenue for athletics.

Recording studios and a flight simulator? What a waste of money. Hey donors, do something worthwhile and give to some foster kids or something.
please remember the deep south football mindset---when u understand that, you will accept what they do.--- as ridiculous as it may be

I understand it just fine. I live in the south, in an SEC city. That doesn't mean I accept or condone it.

i lived in alabama for a few years---as i said its ridiculous. priorities are a little mixed up. its their identity.

I was done in auburn golfing a few years back. It really puts in perspective how far off we are and why we aren’t landing better recruits.
