Axe - How does he remain employed?

I never said he had to paint SU in a good light, but why is it that the overwhelming majority of the articles he writes about SU are negative?
we went 3-9 last year in football? Our hoop team was just put on 5 years probation. What is there to write about that is happy?

Read the articles from the DO today. Proper reporting on Lester's offense (hope), Erv Phillips role (hope), and the return of Hunt at QB (hope). These are all from interviews and reporting - not overhyping anything - just reporting. And I was more jacked to go tomorrow.

Now read the opinion piece from Axe. The premise is negative. While designed to make it better, it's tamping enthusiasm even more. Why couldn't he write it AFTER the game!??!

Who said there was something happy to write about. Let him write about anything he wants but he doesn't have to be a tool when he does.

Irony: there an annual thread about practices not being open and then another thread about not attending the spring game because it's just a practice.

Well the two aren't necessarily connected. Tomorrow's practice is going to be so vanilla that the Marshall St. Starbucks is going to wonder where all the white girls went. An open practice is a view of the team running through offensive and defensive sets, working on special situations like 2 minute or goal line.

I have no issue with SU not wanting to waste a practice slot on a spring "game". Axe has no issue with that either. The issue is why have an event that does nothing for anyone there when you could use a little creativity to help convert some of the "naysayers" into fans. This program needs bodies in the Dome. Remember how people are still bitter with the "get a life" comments?

On a side note, how does an area with the top rated communications school get stuck with such garbage talent on TV, radio and in print. Amazing!
Having TA'd in the Broadcast department, you'd be surprised at how mediocre the talent is. Not everyone coming out of that place is Tirico or Costas. That's not a knock on Newhouse. It's just that once-a-year talent doesn't happen to a whole school.

Secondly, there's lots of out-of-towners in Newhouse. Jersey, Long Island, Westchester, Boston, etc. Not a ton of locals and not a ton of desire to stay here.

Bailey is an SU guy, and I think he's pretty solid. Axe is a bit old school, getting a radio gig at 20. He dropped out of college to take the job. He's a big SU fan who has a public outlet for his opinions.

Hate to say it sometimes the truth hurts. SU basketball is in the center of a major scandal. The football program is in really bad shape. And a player on the lacrosse team was recently arrested for a pretty bad crime. And SU just , let's call it what it is, FIRED their AD and have an interim AD in place right now. Not much positive stuff to write about these days when it comes to SU sports.

I am amazed at how he is still employed in any capacity when it relates to media and covering SU athletics. His radio show is unlistenable and his articles are terrible.

SU should just ban him and Lindsley from coming on campus. Mink is better than both of them, not saying he is anything great and he has only been around a year or two.

I completely agree on Axe's radio show, but hold on about trashing all of our local coverage. I really like Upon Further Review and wish it would take back the 5PM time slot from Axe. I'm running out of excuses to leave work early.

Because the top talent in this top rated school go to larger media markets to make a name for themselves???

I thought he mentioned some good ideas. Sometimes these articles are not going to be on the positive side. Some people just have to take the good with the bad. Thats what the media do. As far as the structure of the event, Im totally fine with it. I get more from seeing situational stuff. Last years game had more buzz but they absoultely did notthing but throw bubble screens. It was a joke. Just because they have the game uni's on and they are divided into two teams doesnt make it any better.

Agreed. However, the comments section at that site (aka the dumpster) blow up only for negative articles. Any semi positive article gets no conversation going. I can totally see the writers being partially influenced by that.

I like Upon Further Review and they are not always roses when it comes to SU but at least they are relatively objective. I didn't mention them in my post.

But seriously...Bud, Cohen, Axe, Lindsley

The only one of those I have a problem with is Lindsley.

Yup thats exactly why they do it. Any thing positive you dont see many comments at all. SMH

cant you give a detail as to why a game vs non-game makes you enjoy the event any more or less? even as a game its all about a player making a play and if the blue team does more than the orange team do you remember that or do you remember which players stand out?
Real Game > Scrimmage against another team > Intrasquad scrimmage > practice session

There are devoted fans who would love to see a practice session. However, if they want to draw excitement from more casual fans, they need to more and plan it better. If they decide they don't want to risk players being hurt or giving away playbook secrets, make it more of an interactive fan day. I like the idea of having contests for the players, etc...that would combine both.

I think the day before Easter makes sense, actually. People will be in town to see family and possibly go to the Dome. There is a flip side that some people will be away from Syracuse visiting family.
And people like me, not from Syracuse can't really take he time away from family on the holiday weekend to travel that far for the event. We have 15 people coming over tomorrow for an Easter meal. I'd love to be at the event but my wife would kill me if I left her to do all he work that needs doing.
